How many do I need?

I carry with one in the chamber and a topped off mag. Typically carry a spare mag (...most of the time)

25 rounds.

Hope I NEVER have occasion to find out if this is enough, but I generally feel adequately equipped.

...to get to a rifle ;)

just wondering how many have actually played out a home invasion, and have a plan for action in the casa.

lol, i did this a few times with the youngest daughter, and the big boss. , simple plan, dogs, me, them.
key words for access and recognition, before action plan and after action plan.

and the devil help them if they get past the dogs, what i miss they will surely handle easily, the killing corridor is quite small, so #4 buck will handle it all, and of course they both have side arms.

it is good to have a plan, whilst plans don't always work, its a begining, and the end, well, it will find itself, always does

good shooting

Me and the ol lady have a plan set up for anything that may happen if bump goes in the night and have played it out.

I have a lock on our bedroom door. I live in a tin can and there isnt a whole lot of space for people to get lost. Its a simple plan and maybe not very heroic but .. I have insurance and should get some money back for anything taken .. I worry first and foremost about my wife. I have kind of grown attached to her after 20 years.

My simple plan .. stay cloistered behind the bed as cover with an 870 pointed at the door. Part of my going to bed routine is to bring in my phone and my living room gun. Anything outside the bedroom I can replace. Its just stuff. You crack the door to the bedroom ... and there will be a world of hurt.

Stuff can be replaced.

There are a few handguns and other nasties in there. Dont want to test it .. dont come in the bedroom.

A home invasion while we are home .. I will admit .. I will have to wing it.

My plan is very similar to Alex’s - except I have to corral a ten year old in the mix...

Not a day goes by that I don’t regret buying a stucco home.

Depends, just a go out will be 8-9 rounds, church carry a extra mag. Offroading matters where. Slim chance of illegal traffic just 30 rounds hand gun, high chance of illegal traffic area 30 rounds for pistol & around 80 for the AR. My ride along will carry the same.

My hallway is 21 feet long and my shotgun does a 7 1/2'' spread at 7 yards with 00 or number 4 buck.

I can see how I totally worded this post wrong.......
"how many bullets do you need" is what I hear from people in disgust, who think two spare mags is like going off to war, and it's totally unjustified if you're not a cop. Yet the news story presented is a clear cut example of what can happen anytime, anywhere....and that you never know what you'll need.
But I've heard rj's statement more than once, that what you have at the bedside, or on you, is what you use to fight to get to where you have what you need to take care of business.
For me it's all about where I am going to be. Each situation is going to present different potential circumstances that might present. No one can plan for all occurrences, just prioritize the top few that realistically may occur. As said by others home has and should have a practiced plan. All external has a basic defence and withdrawal plan. If SHTF and WROL then that changes things greatly!

I need as many as it takes for the situation at hand.
If i am hunting big game, hopefully I only need one but better carry three
If I'm hunting varmint, I may need anywhere from a box for groundhogs to 200 for prairie dogs
If I'm going into town, hopefully I won't need any but if I do, I want as many as I can carry in the gun.
If I'm going to the range, I probably will shoot 200
If I'm buying to stock up I need 1000 to get a decent price
If SHTF for any reason I need as many as I can get
but then it's not about need... it's a matter of how many do I want, which is nobody's business.

Those people must be referring to the part of the Constitution known as the Bill of Needs, in which the government has the right to decide what people need.
How many abortions do you need? How many books do you need? How many electronic devices? How many pairs of shoes? How much money do they really need? If liberals really want to go there, then they better not whine and snivel when the government tells them what they need.

If the gun is for self defense, I suppose you could put a limit on it. If the purpose of the gun is to keep the government from rounding up fugitive slaves, Native Americans, Japanese-Americans, Jews, or homosexuals, and putting them on trains and shipping them to camps, then 30 is not nearly enough.

Oh! OK, I see I read the question and didn't click the link...
I thought we were talking about the typical anti-gun rhetoric.

The answers of how much you would carry out and about don't address the video of a potential home invasion either. So the real question is how many bullets does one keep at ready for potential home invasions? News reports I have read so far indicate usually 2 or 3 perps but this video shows that it could be a lot more. 5 guys could take a while to supress depending on how committed they are and their shooting ability.

Like many indicated, you should have a pistol but it is to make them take cover while you get to your rifle or shotgun. Then an AR pistol or SBR with proper ammo for the situation would be more useful. Many would have to be aware of wall penetration and neighbors so that has to be thought out before shooting willy-nilly throughout the house.

So in light of the new video, I have 12 loaded in my .40 and 2 loaded mags plus a couple other surprises I won't mention.

Whats wrong with stucco? Wouldn't it stop errant round better than alum or vinyl siding?

JUST ONE!!! THE RIGHT ONE!!! THE ONE THAT'S GONNA FINISH THE JOB AFTER THE FIRST BANG!!
And if there are 2...3...or more people involved? Or you miss (gasp!!!). Ever been attacked or under fire before? Big difference between that and punching holes in paper or even doing run and gun drills as there is no actual danger involved in those.

That kind of false bravado helps the antis as they can point to it and say, "look even a gun guy says he doesn't need a 30rd mag".
