Juneteenth: Potato Joe's pseudo-holiday.

From Wikipedia:

Spurred on by the advocates and the Congressional Black Caucus, on June 15, 2021, the Senate unanimously passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act,[115] establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday; it subsequently passed through the House of Representatives by a 415–14 vote on June 16.[116][117] President Joe Biden signed the bill (Pub.L. 117–17 (text) (PDF))[118][119] on June 17, 2021, making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal holiday and the first to obtain legal observance as a federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983.[120][121][122] According to the bill, federal government employees will now get to take the day off every year on June 19, or should the date fall on a Saturday or Sunday, they will get the Monday or Friday closest to the Saturday or Sunday on which the date falls.[123]

The useless federal employees get another day off. If they like this holiday so much they should give up one of their many other federal holidays in exchange for Juneteenth. Pick one.

2022 federal holidays:

New Year’s Day: Saturday, January 1 (Observed Friday, December 31)

Martin Luther King Jr Day: Monday, January 17

President’s Day: Monday, February 21

Memorial Day: Monday, May 30

Juneteenth: Sunday, June 19 (Observed Monday, June 20)

Independence Day: Monday, July 4

Labor Day: Monday, September 5

Indigenous Peoples’ Day (also observed as Columbus Day): Monday, October 10

Veterans’ Day: Friday, November 11

Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 24

Christmas Day: Sunday, December 25 (Observed Monday, December 26)

I despise the ol' Biking Biden - but I don't have an issue with him making this a national holiday. Even a blind senile squirrel may occasionally stumble upon an acorn.

Unlike many, I actually look at some of the "holidays" (Independence day, memorial day, etc) with an appreciation for the reason - not as a day off (which I usually work anyway) or an excuse to buy into the commercialization. The problem with "holidays" is that they have fell victim to consumerism at it's most ridiculous. I bet 50% of the dingbats who cry foul when they don't get some "holiday" off - can't even tell you why it is a "holiday." They just want to be off work, or have an excuse to spend money on stuff they don't need or can't afford.

So let me bring on the hate I am sure to receive with this....

There should be a "Holiday" (or more appropriately - Day of Remembrance) for either Jan 1st, 1863 (the date of the Emancipation Proclamation) but since that would be overshadowed by the actually useless "New Years" I can see why June 19th is chosen (for those that don't know it was the issue of "General Order No. 3" in Texas - freeing approx quarter million slaves and to some extent ending slavery in this country.) It has been a state holiday since the 70s in Texas. Like it or not - the eventual demise of Slavery in this country is a big deal and should be remembered as one of the largest leaps in this country's social/economic/moral evolution.

And honestly I think calling Juneteenth, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veteran's Day a "Holiday" is stupid - they should be a "Day of Remembrance."

Let the silly ones based on no real historical importance happening like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, President's day, Columbus Day, and Labor Day - those are "Holidays." I am sure this paragraph will p*ss some of you off - but lets be real Columbus wasn't the first "discoverer" of this land, religious holidays shouldn't be federal, we shouldn't celebrate any President's birthday (or politician in general) as they are a public servants, and the other's aren't worthy of being federal either.

I wouldn't mind at all if they axed any of those mentioned in my last paragraph and replaced them with some remembrance of an actually historically important happening or limited federal holidays to only dates with real significance to this country.

I don't begrudge there being a day of observance for ending slavery. But I do bristle at the political games around it.

I have an internet friend who is an expat American who has lived in Germany for close to 35 years. He was stationed there in the 80's, and decided to stay. Has married a woman there and has a grown adult son there. He doesn't even bother visiting the U.S. anymore and Germany is definitely home for him.

But since he hasn't lived here for a while, he sometimes isn't up on things,...like Juneteenth.

I know that I am out of touch with mainstream U.S. happenings, but last Thursday was a first. I went to the Service Federal Credit Union on Ramstein Air Base, and it was at least a year since I was in there. There was an announcement scrolling on the info banner that read "Due to the Juneteenth (even my auto-correct changes it to nineteenth) Holiday, your credit union will be closed Monday, June 20th."

As I was waiting in line, I kept reading that scroll, and had absolutely no idea what it meant. Obviously there is some kind of holiday on the 20th of June, and it must be a federal holiday, else the credit union wouldn't be closed, but "Juneteenth"! What the hell does that mean? It must be a typo, as that word means nothing. I thought maybe the 'teenth' part had something to do with the numbers 13 to 19, but it is happening on the 20th. It just made no sense to me at all.

So when I got to the counter, I asked the girl what that scroll meant, and she got real snotty with me and said it means exactly what it says, "dat da credit union be closed on Monday, fo de Juneteenth holiday, you gots a problem wif dat?"

I replied that I could personally care less when the credit union chooses to open and close, but what the hell does "Juneteenth" mean? She closed the window, and a few minutes later one of the supervisors came to the window, and asked me to please come to an office with him. There he asked me where I worked, my affiliation with the credit union, and explained that the cashier felt that I was being "racially insensitive" to her, and wants to file an official grievance against me. I was shocked. What? For asking what the hell Juneteenth means? That is absurd.

He explained what the holiday is, and I have since researched it myself, but how was I supposed to know that? And how could anything as misspelled as that get into the federal vernacular?

Later, at the Belgian bar on base, I was warned not to talk about that in public, as it is a very sensitive subject in the military, and expressing any opinion or question other than joyous celebration is viewed as radical extreme behaviour.

I honestly never heard a single word about Juneteenth before I read it on the banner.

And the answer is "No" I did not apologize to the girl, I said she should apologize to me for being rude.

And it shouldn't be celebrated on any day outside of the 13th to the 19th anyway.

Shut your whore mouths. I love Juneteenth and the breaking of Ramadan. It always meant the best food brought into the prison by the chaplains.

Better yet they made the inmates share with the staff.

It was a beautiful thing.

It is easy for the politicians to play fast and loose with the taxpayer dollars when, unlike a private business, they don't have to turn a profit to remain viable. If the politicians need more money they just dig deeper into the taxpayer's pockets.

Saw on the news that someone was protesting that businesses were trying to profit from the holiday. As if they don't try to profit from all the others. More BS.

I'm laying in bed enjoying my Juneteenth. Free at last, free at last, 8 hours of pay are free at last!

Businesses profit from most holidays...Memorial Say sales, Labor Day sales, Presidents Day sales, etc.

Unless the sales slogan is "We're whipping down our prices" or "Everything is three fifths off", then there is no reason to protest anything.

I thought of some more for your consideration;

Even Uncle Tom wouldn't miss these prices!

We've got a boat load of savings!

Our sales prices are better than a riot!

I saw NOAA weather website calling Monday this thing, wondered WTF they were doing?

There is always that 10% that do not get the word, or slavishly follow fashion.
Curmudgeon, I am.
