Kroger takes away paid Covid benefits, add insurance charges for Unvaccinated employees

Kroger said Tuesday that it will take away paid leave for unvaccinated employees who get Covid and require some of them to pay a monthly health insurance surcharge starting next year.

The country’s largest supermarket operator sent a companywide memo announcing the changes, which take effect Jan. 1. A company spokeswoman said the new policies are intended to encourage staff to get the Covid vaccines, adding it will continue to offer a $100 incentive to all employees who become fully vaccinated.

“As we prepare to navigate the next phase of the pandemic, we are modifying policies to encourage safe behaviors including vaccination,” she said in a statement.

Starting next year, salaried, nonunion employees who are unvaccinated and enrolled in the company’s health insurance plan must pay a monthly $50 surcharge, the company spokeswoman said.

But employees who are fully vaccinated are eligible for paid Covid leave, if they get a breakthrough case.

Kroger is one of the country’s biggest employers with about 465,000 workers.

I knew this was coming with insurance company's, be ready for others to follow with a higher rate for those unvaxed people

How is this not discriminatory? Are they charging the morbidly obese, HIV, AIDS, cancer, handicapped et al as well?
Or better yet, will Kroger payout when those with the vax have heart ailments, clot issues, brain damage, termnated pregnancies etc due to them having to be vaccinated?

People who smoke have higher insurance rates. People with multiple car accidents have higher insurance rates. Insurance companies are run by actuarial tables and statistics...this is nothing new.

Absolutely. People with lower credit scores also pay more for loans and insurance. There's lots of discrimination out there.

It’s wild how bad credit makes everything cost more.

Kick 'em while they're down!

I'm not a big fan of Fry's regardless of the new direction. They were one of the first grocery chains to go hard on all of the mask requirements and arbitrary covid restrictions.

No, it 's not kicking people while they're down in most cases.

In most cases, people have low credit scores because they make a lot of bad decisions, not just one bad decision. And people that make bad decisions are bad credit risks, bad driving risks and so on.

Sure, there are people with low scores through no fault of their own, but most have low scores because of a lack of good judgment.

Agreed. My remark was a joke off of what DevilDoc mentioned.

If someone's credit is low, that might be a good indicator to a bank that they'll have to work hard for repayment, so it only makes sense to up the interest rates and such. And as you mentioned, it probably means they make a lot of bad decisions.

I was just talking to a friend this morning about running credit checks on people. He has some apartment units that he rents out, and he always mentions to potential tenants that he needs to run a credit check on them. He said that one guy just explained that he didn't have the greatest credit and told him the reason. He didn't even bother running his credit and he let the guy rent. But, he said that when he brings up the credit check with some that they just turn and walk away. Those are the people that you really don't want. They have a lot of trouble in the past... and probably in their present too.

Let me get this straight, its okay to penalize an employee on a company wide policy because they made a choice to not inject an experimental poison (which day after day the adverse and lethal effects as well as the absolute cover up of the true facts of Big Pharma's so called study come to light) in their body.
Just curious.
Now.back to the scheduled downfall of America... Have a nice day..

So, what about the employees that have a religious exemption?

Violation of the 1st amendment rights, no? Religious persecution. I imagine a judge might have a different opinion thane the insurance companies matter WHEN a lawsuit is filed.

The answer is (I'm sure) that this was likely driven by Kroger's insurance company. They likely simply stated to Kroger that their risk assessment is X, therefore Kroger will do Y, or Kroger's new insurance costs will be Z. Kroger then weighed the cost of those elevated insurance premiums vs the potential cost of litigation by pissed off employees and decided the odds were in favor of phuking over the employees. It's an old story, really, and shows how insurance companies are who REALLY run the world and are pretty much evil.

Yes insurance companies drive a lot issues with rates. When in Mesa meetings about communications the police and fire ruled, why....business insurance rates depend on response time, equip on hand etc...the budget gods seemingly gave them whatever they wanted. To high of an insurance rate joe blow will build elsewhere or nowadays just raise prices.
