Fishing

I am determined to take up fishing before I meet god.

My understanding is both canyon lake and saguaro are stocked. Right?

Is it worth trying to fish there over the fall and winter?
What would I likely be fishing for?
Besides getting permits .. what other rules should I know about?
Do you eat what you pull out or do you throw em back?

Figure there is enough reading material for me to figure out what lures or bait to use for whatever species of fish is there but .. Wife is retiring and while we dont intend to be on the sports fishermans tour ... it does seem like a nice way to kick a few hours. We would likely fish from piers or the waters edge somewhere.

I don’t call myself a fisherman but I do enjoy taking my gear out and casting knowing I’m not going to catch anything.

Read the fishing reports. The right bait and technique seems to be the key. Fish finder helps too.

I’ll let others chime in with more professional advice. Hope fishing brings you peace and excitement (when you catch one of course).

When I was a kid and kids were allowed to disappear for the entire day some friends and I would walk along the belt pkway some 4-5 miles to Canarsie pier in Brooklyn and fish for fluke. It was a great time!!

Fishing as a means for food is done on salt water.


Fishing as a means of relaxation is done on fresh water.


So when it comes to lake and stream fishing, whether you catch something or not is secondary. The whole obsession with the gear and the techniques and how to land the fish;...that's just the hobbyist OCD end of it all. Kinda like reloading is for me. I don't NEED to reload, but I enjoy it. For me, it is a zen-like relaxing pastime. The close focus required so that I don't blow myself up makes me push everything else in my head aside. By the time I'm done loading up some ammo, I've forgotten all about the bad schit going on around me and I'm at peace. A lot of guys feel similarly about fishing.

One of my co-workers is big into fishing. Mostly does Canyon.

Why not fish from your kayaks? Floating wader set ups aren't terribly expensive and greatly change your options of areas.

When I fish , I find a nice comfortable shade tree to sit under.
Bring something good to drink and eat.
Light up a good cigar.
Cast the line in the water and lean back against the tree and enjoy life.
Just remember not to bait the hook. You don't want any fish bothering you.
