Not having AC in Europe is a whole different thing than not having AC in Arizona.
I can't imagine how people lived out here in the valley without AC. It had to be a rough life in the summer time.

we didn't have ac until around 68, having grown up here, the heat just ''was'', and pretty much still is, i've worked out in it my whole life being in ''construction biz'', in the last few weeks, have had at least three neophytes give up attempting to work in the warm weather.
hell we haven't even had our ac on yet, we do have a cooler, mid june is ac time, but hey, ''just the way it is''

I've been living in Germany for 5 years now (really hope to go home in the next year or so). The summers are brutal. If you have a large enough home you can move into the basement to try to keep cool. If you don't, and are elderly or have some kind of condition, you might not survive. And that is just accepted here as the cost of doing business. Don't forget that 90+ degrees plus 100% humidity is horrible. There is absolutely no relief to be had. And that is coming from somebody whose home is in Tucson.
