does anyone carry a rifle on em for work or just for personal reasons in a back pack during the day? I need something 30 inches ID and a compartment for a few mags and radio. If anyone has any ideas. Not all tacticool either.

Sneaky Bags will make something you would like.

I carry a CZ Scorpion in a messenger bag.

10.5 in barrel=28 in total. i wont go any shorter on an AR. im trying to avoid a folder as its one more thing to do before deploying and another weak point. IMO

All AR-15's are break downs...extended pins only add a few seconds to deployment.

That’s to long for work. You don’t always have seconds

Putting a upper on a lower takes a lot longer than flipping a butt stock back into position

Jansport hiking pack. The Kalamath 55 has the right internal dimensions to fit the specs you gave.
I however think you should seriously consider a smaller weapon or one with a folding stock. A smaller, standard sized college backpack is much more discreet.

Another option that may just fit if you keep the OAL down is the 5.11 discreet sling bag.

Discreet bags/carry of a long gun is not fast. You are playing Marie Antoinette in this play...

Are you not using a collapsible stock either?

Have you thought about trying a PDW stock, could get your overall length down a few more inches. I've used the Strike Industries Viper PDW stock on my SBRs and they have been flawless. No proprietary BCG and cheaper than some of the other PDW options out there.

Pictured is my 9" 300 BLK, but also have one on a 10.5" 5.56 and the difference isn't much. Can't remember the overall length, but I'll measure and throw it up here later.

ended up with the mystery ranch 55l duffle bag. its slim and has more then enough space and not tactical at all

I have the Undercover Backpack from Sportsmans Guide... doesn't look too tacticool and is tall enough for a PAP with a folding brace.

Law Folder is the way to go in this situation.

Law folder adds about 1" to the OAL when folded, beyond what the length of the upper would be separate from the lower. Use a brace, 10.5" barrel, and you have something that will easily fit in a backpack.

PDW is too much expense for not enough reward, and it's heavy.

Separating upper from lower is dumb and slow.
