Years ago Jesse at safe city installed my new fort knox and I put a bucket of damp rid in why not? Well today is move the safe day and I figured the damp rid would just get tossed as I had forgotten about it. Had a full cup of moisture at least. It is in a closet in a bedroom walkin closet must have been moisture from steamy showers over the years. Damp Rid works in AZ was unexpected.

When I first got my safe I put a Damp Rid in, the one that looks like a little bucket, this was at the beginning of summer, by Fall the solid stuff was gone and there was about 2 cups of liquid at the bottom, tossed it out.
For the replacement I went to the crafts store Michael's and went to the flower arrangement section, got me a large box of Silica Gel, I don't remember if it's. 5 or 10lbs, put some in a sock and hung it out of the way in the safe, you have to be careful that it doesn't touch any gun, moisture will be transferred and rust will begin where it's touching, has worked great for quite a few years now.

I use one of those desiccant gizmos that you can take out and plug in to cook off any moisture. Has the color changing crystals to see if it needs a cooking cycle.

That and a recording hygrometer to monitor high humidity levels.

Wife was using the hanging bag Damp rid in a closet near my safe amd the damn thing leaked all over the place. The cup you just need to not knock over.

Chit - I never thought moisture to be an issue in any of my safes here in AZ.......you guys got me all concerned now.

I've used a Golden Rod in my safes for years but you hafta check on them, they do burn out occasionally
The Golden rod does not remove moisture, just prevents the internal temp falling below the dewpoint and condensation forming.

Or so I understand it. Reading up on it:

"'Therefore, warm air, which is filled with highly-energized water molecules, often contains more water molecules than cooler air, which is filled with water molecules that more easily condense and become water."

So keeping things warm is a good thing if there is moisture in there.

Being a bit OCD, I have a golden rod AND one of those Peltier gizmos that separates out the water. Only in Hawaii. Arizona, no need, just the desiccant.

Just checked at Michael's, 5 lb at $26.99 with the 20%. Code it drops to $21.59,
Still less than the small tin from the gun shops, mine is the color changing but then again I got it almost 20years ago and paid around $8.00 , still working.

I hear if ya got a fireproof safe it's def an issue as many use the moisture in their filling to keep the contents cooler in case it heats up in a fire

hmm, i have 7 safes in the play room, also use an evap cooler during some months, safes have been there for decades, each safe has a small container of cat litter in a plastic container with holes, and will say without a doubt, have never, never had an issue with moisture, the one safe in garage also has never had issues, its an old first gen sturdy safe, not a fire safe either, i just keep junk i n it, but again never an issue. everyones mileage will differ, i have cast iron tools in my shop and have again never had an issue with surface rust on the table tops, but again i keep things waxed or lubed, several times a year i pull gear out of safes and givem a rub, if i don't takem shooting,
enjoy the moment, happy thursday

Amazon sells some hygrometers that record high and low humidity levels. You might be surprised how high the humidity can go during the monsoons. Probably not in the safe, it is usually closed after all.
I keep one of these in there to record things:
