Military convoys are seen collapsing in on Beijing from all points. Nearly all flights are cancelled. Smoke seen rising from government and party compounds in forbidden parts of city. Rumor is that Xi is under house arrest and has been removed by senior members of the party.
Was the threatened invasion of Taiwan the last straw? Was it the incompetence in dealing with Covid? Was it economic mismanagement? Was it all these?
One thing seems certain to observers of Chinese political things is that none of this just happened in a vacuum. Xi's recent meeting with Putin last week was the first time he had traveled outside of China in almost 3 years. It was undoubtedly during his absence that the coup was set in motion. That also suggests that Xi has been concerned during that time about maintaining his position and has been quietly working to prevent exactly this. His lack of willingness to more fully team up with Putin now makes more sense when viewed through the lens of a boss trying to hold on and not lose his grip.
This will also make Putin more paranoid for his own skin, while at the same time giving his inside opponents hope and encouragement to do the same.
Never a dull moment in the game of thrones.
No way to know who will replace him and whether they will be better or worse. But one can hope. Wouldn't it be nice to see early 90's Chinese stuff again? And there's a whole slew of models the Canadians have been able to get since then that we haven't, like the 6mm round they have adopted, the bullpup and other rifles that fire it. Type 81s, QSZ-92s, cheap copies of SIG and Colt pistols and M14s. Oy,...and cheap ammo. Well,...one can dream.
