If you missed the original headlines, they met online.
She flies down from Boston for their date. They start hiking up Camelback Mountain around 10:00 with no water. She gets sick and light headed. She heads back down to the car. He continues up the trail. He returns a couple hours later and can't find her. He calls 911, they find her dead outside a house near by apparently trying to get water and relief from the heat.

Should this guy be wearing a badge and carrying a gun? Not in my book.
He has no common sense and completely ignored all of his training. I'm sure the Phx PD has training on dealing with people who are experiencing heat exhaustion or borderline heat stroke.

Hiking at 10:00 with no water? What an idiot...

In one report he said she asked him to go up to take pictures she could post on her Instagram. I don’t find that too hard to believe. Phoenix Fire indicated she likely got off trail and may have gotten lost. Who knows how much distress she was in at the time they separated. I’ve overheated myself a couple times doing things outdoors in the summer and it can come on quick. It’s quite possible she was fine when she turned around. Also, the part you felt the need to underline is misleading compared to the reports I’ve seen. He went to the top, came down, and started looking for her in the parking lot. It’s not like he left to get lunch and came back.

Hindsight being 20/20, obviously there weren’t great decisions made by either of them. I don’t think there’s any evidence that he had bad intentions or ever imagined it would turn out like this. You can look at 99.99% of shitty situations and point to ways it could have been avoided. Jumping to conclusions and calling for him to lose his career and livelihood over it makes zero sense.

That girl went through climate change from Camelback to Boston could be huge temp difference.

Unfortunately I believe his story. Its hot out there. I am not a youngster like she is but I am pretty comfortable with the heat and after messing around outdoors yesterday for half the day I feel asleep in my chair in front of the tv at 7pm. I never felt in distress or anything that severe but ..it took a lot out of me.

Your just came over from Boston!! forget it. She was supposedly a fitness person and no doubt she thought ... Pfft .. no problem. Until there was one.

In the phony instagram world where people make believe they are on planes headed to exotic places while sitting in their bathtub .. I believe miss pouty face would have wanted cool pix from the top and would have had zero problems posting on one of her pages ... "look at the beautiful sunset after I climbed to the top of Camelback in Arizona. Makes me feel so alive."

Even though she turned around and didnt make it up.

I have hiked Miles and Miles and miles ... and I still lose my sense of direction. Its the desert! I always make it back to the car but it aint always the most expeditious route and almost never the same route I went out by.

NO water .. fuk .. she just fried. Now .. a$$hole boy should have known not to make such an ambitious trip with a newbie. he should have known to bring copious amounts of water and included several stops along the route to check on her. If you were an EMT in AZ then you must have handled more than a few calls on people burning out on the trails. He should have known more than anyone.. but when that blood rushes to the nether region and you are only thing about taggin that A$$ you make stupid decisions. This one cost a girl her life.

I agree, I think if one has been living in Arizona for any length of time we adapt to the heat somewhat and can often forgot how dangerous it can be especially to those that have not been climatized yet. Part of my job is outside or in a non air conditioned shop which feels hotter inside then outside. It kicks your ass working in that environment even being well hydrated. Every year we get guys on the verge of heat stroke or exhaustion. We have learned what to look for and look out for each other but you do get complacent being the normal everyday life and can forgot how dangerous the heat can be.

you know as they say, young, dumb and full of c**! They done messed up but dont think it was anything more then that.

She flies down from Boston to meet him
and he doesn't have the decency to make sure she gets back down OK ?

That guy is a douche.

hes POS, no one forgets how hot it gets, give me a freaken brake, someone oughta tie him to a stack and let him dehydrate some, screw him, shame on his pos attitude also, the minute he took her to the hill climb to impress her she became his responsibility, he needs to pay
although nothing will return this young gal to her family

As most of long time desert dwellers know, by the time she noticed she was in trouble it's close to too late.
Probably not trying to do her in but he sure did not help her any.
Sad indeed for her.

Like the drunk girl at the bar, tried to hang in there too long. Shoulda tapped out sooner.

I'm not an "in shape guy" by any means. However, I'm a native (people say we're born with the desert skin..lol), and I know that even under moderate exertion the amount of H2O I should have. Even just standing around in direct midday heat you could need 32oz an hour..

Is it his "fault"? No. Could've/should've he advise better? ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY!

I think it is his fault. He is responsible for any guest of his that he takes sight seeing in the desert.
He didn't take any water.

I'm sure that the Phx PD training classes repeatedly warn trainees about the dangers of the heat, the importance of always having water, how to recognize heat exhaustion in your partner and how to save your partner's life. What if he was on a call and he and his partner were in a foot chase and his partner overheated like that? It would have been a different outcome. He would have stopped chasing the bad guy and stayed with his partner, I have no doubt.

Starting a hike at 10:00 when it is 100˚F and the high temp will be over 108˚ with no water is irresponsible on his part. He is 100% at fault here. He should have walked her back to the car and then discussed getting a sunrise pic the next day.

You have a great point there! I am usually returning home by 10 oclock .. 11 the latest. I mean walking in my door home. Its still hot but its not "sun trying to cook you hot" and truth is .. a a camera nerd .. the desert is a lot prettier early. By 10am its all just a grey haze and by 11 its just blown out with no shadows. If he really wanted to show her something impressive they should have been out there at 5.

Make no mistake .. I think he is a POS but .. I can absolve him for not walking her back to the car. Ya just cant tell women what to do anymore.

I can absolve him of carrying on because I DO believe she would have begged him to get some pix from the top so she could post it to one of those facebook type sites and claim she made it up and have a whole backstory that never happened.

But you lose me when you take someone who hasnt lived here a while on a hike at 10 and then dont have water and suggest that they drink it regularly. Out with my wife I still have to tell her. "Baby take some water."

For all the guys who say "it's not his fault" imagine your teenage daughter going on a date with a guy to hike and he leaves her. Your opinion would not be "it's not his fault".

Yup .. raised 2 girls .. I would want to put him down

He's a real stand up guy isn't he? Just what we need on the streets.

Yup he is dirt and I imagine not very smart. All I am saying is his story is very plausible. When the story first broke everyone, especially her friends back home thought there was something nefarious.

Just a stupid, narcissist. Now does his story as credible as it may be absolve him of guilt in the legal system ... I don't know?

Legally he's probably in the clear but shouldn't be.

Morally, he should be beaten to death by the woman's family and friends.

if it was one of my daughters or grand daughters, the thread would be about: what ever happened to that guy that took a gal hiking and left her for dead.'' itd be old news quickly

I was raised that way also.

Too bad more people weren't because it would make the world a far better place.
