Why would they. 25th NORAD most likely picked it up before it ever got close to our shores, there had to be a reason they let it get so far inland. Sadly, we'll never know that reason.

Considering they used to snatch film being returned from space mid air, and there were all those insane parachuter snatches / ground snatches with moving aircraft - they could do it.

Question is - what was it sending back to the homeland , and what all sensors / equipment did it have. Seems rather suspicious that it floated around this long and no one was too concerned in upper management.
