There's an old family friend that lives in CA with a Tec 9 he wants to sell me.

Since it's an "assault weapon," he cannot find any FFL's that will ship it to my FFL.

It's maddening. He's owned the weapon since the 80's. He got is "registration" paperwork back in the 90's and yet no FFL will touch it out there.

So absolutely maddening.

Sorry, rant off.

This is why knowing how to be an outlaw is so cool.

Anyone in my circle would have just shipped it by now.

(They also wouldn't be caught dead in Cali, but whatever.)

While a pricy option, if you both really want to do the deal he could personally deliver it to an AZ FFL who could then transfer it to you

That was something I considered, but in his advanced years, he's having back issues and driving from the coast to AZ is not a good option for him.

That's what FFL's told him to do. But I don't want to chance him getting in trouble...just in case someone happened to check the box.

I did this once years ago but just for a handgun. Previous owner(CA resident and friend of a friend) needed to get proof of sale from a FFL to get the thing off the CA list showing him as the owner. Such a PITA I wouldn't do it again.

The ironic thing is that, because KA hates Evil Assault Weapons so much, they should make it easier, not harder, to get them out of their wonderful state.

They want them destroyed. If he had any kids that lived out there, he could not even leave them to them in a will. They have to be turned over to the gestapo.

Rent a minivan, you drive, and set him up with a comfy setup in back. It is not all that long a drive as long as you avoid peak LasVegas weekend crap.

I drove from San Diego to Tucson in around 5 hours, but I am a leadfoot and monitored CHP radio traffic.

The best decision we've ever made in our adult life was escaping from that absolutely dung hole of a state. When we got here the first thing I did was remove those ridiculous bullet buttons off my rifles.

The second thing I did was join AzCDL.

Why don't you just find a nearby FFL here that will receive from private party?
We have no such roster, and it shouldn't be an issue. I have one in Central Phoenix that I use,
$25 per gun.

If your friend needs a BOS, generate him one from any of the free such offers on the net.
Let him save his shipping receipt, addressed to the FFL, that he sent the gun OUT of
Kommifornia.

SCREW UPS, and have him use a FedEx 'hub', or corporate location. NOT, a franchised one,
like those inside Kinkos or MailBoxes, Etc. They won't touch firearms.

I agree with pneuby
The owner should only need to get a copy of the receiving FFl's license they are shipping to.
Package the firearm and include a valid up to date copy of their drivers license with the firearm. The reason for the DL information is so the receiving FFL can log it into their books.
I prefer to ship overnight with tracking and insurance.

I have shipped many firearms to other FFls / manufacturers and gunsmiths without me shipping from an FFL.
I don't know if Ca. has any laws against this practice.

Agree with a lot of the sentiment here. I left CA myself way back in 1987, which is when he actually bought this gun. He got a "registration" letter in 93 when they really started getting stupid with their laws. He's at the age now where he wants to get rid of some of the stuff he is not legally allowed to leave to family.

So what finally happened was this. He finally found an FFL that has an "assault weapons" license. Apparently there are only a small handful of them in the entire state and pay a fortune for that license. They want $250 just to look at/transfer the weapon and about $60 to ship it to my FFL here in AZ. The seller is just going to deduct that amount from what I will pay him for the gun.

So after over a month of trying to figure this out, it's finally going to happen. I'll post pics of what I'm getting once it arrives.

What a rip off can they cite the law that requires it to be sent through a dealer?
Sounds like they are just ripping you off..
