One of the best tips I ever got about buying used vehicles was from an old cowboy I new when I was a kid.

He said never buy a used vehicle before you drive it down a washboard dirt road.
You can learn a lot about a vehicle by running it down a dirt road.

There was a mid 90s Tacoma advertised for sale in Oregon. Low miles for its age. Pix looked great. Ad included a Carfax report that looked pretty good. Careful examination of the Carfax report indicated it was issued in about 2006, with an Arizona dealers name on it. The miles reported in the ad were reasonable for a car driven since 2006. My conclusion was that the odometer had been replaced then and the truck cleaned up for the ad. Buyer beware.

I look at the seller as carefully as the vehicle and try to buy from one-owner senior citizens, who usually get their cars regularly serviced at the dealerships and have the receipts to show for it.
