Got it in my head to take my Sig 229 from DA/SA to DAO. I have mentioned before .. my first love is revolver and as recently as 2 weeks ago am still able to fairly rapidly ding a 6" round at 50-60 yds in DA unsupported. Was actually shooting at targets at at different distances and spread apart and while standing in one spot cleared 6 zombies pretty hastily.

Was out with a buddy and he set up some timed close quarter drills. Ran through it with the revolver pretty well, short stroked the sig looking for the reset and flubbed it.

So .. nice thing about the Sigs is they are built of big chunky parts so easy to work on. She is now a DAO and I havent done anything but shoot it since at an indoor range ... Im digging it. Only cost me about $25 bucks and 3 brain cells.

Next up was the M&P 2.0 40C. Love the gun. Rigid frame low recoil fits in the hand like a glove. For plastic .. up there as one of my favorites .. except for the hinged trigger. The trigger action on the 2.0 is actually pretty good but .. hated the hinged trigger.

Pretty much no trigger shoe available for them so I went ahead and installed the APEX Duty enhanced trigger package yesterday. OOoooooooo ... ok .. its much better than the stock trigger action and while it cost a small fortune ... I got the gun at a bargain price when there were still bargains to be had so I think its worth it. Another gun that is pretty simple to mess with. Yes I tested it .. it works.

So 2 guns now "personallized" in the last week.

No gun survives around me very long without being personalized , just the way it is.
I use to be fine buying project guns to mess with but they have become unobtainium .
Now I look with evil intent at guns I own that are working just fine. :think:

The jig ALMOST makes it hard to mess up. Did you go basic black or ???

Polishing up a cheap Winchester 1904 .22 long/short rifle. Bit by bit.
Got the bore passable and the rust off. Now to see if I can salvage the stock or order a replacement.

How are you attacking the rusty bits? Vinegar, flitz, just oil and a brush ??

Brass brush and copious amounts of oil for the barrel/action.
Got it down to the brown bluing and used the wire wheel for the internal workings.

Took a tack hammer to the dings and divots to peen them back a bit last week. Then took a dremel wire wheel to the bolt. Flitz after that. The bolt looks OK now.

Later I'll use my brass screw and re-crown and blue the muzzle. Its got a few dings.
Now to decide on the stock.

Trigger job on PA63. Went from "Commie garbage" to "okay." I forgot how the sear and hammer interacted when the parts were out lol.

This weekends project was a good deal less exciting. Swapped out my computers CPU for bigger faster more which is easy mechanically but .. trying to get the bios and operating system to accept and recognize its new body part was a bit more challenging.

Think this weekend I will start building a knife kit! The CPU thing broke my head.

Got the stock on the 1904 sanded pegged and glued back together.
Now to find some wood putty and fill in the cracks and holes.

Then sand and stain the whole thing again.

An interesting little project

trying my hand at doing an age old stock repair,like the did back in the day, got a decent match on the wood and grain, so not to pin so it lasts a life time. time will tell, but only if i move it out so its gets some use, lol, instead of setting and only being fondled occassionaly

It seems I'm always tinkerin. I have an old SW model 39 that I have grown fond of that is in need of refinishing. So I thought what the hell, lets try some basic pistol smithing stuff.
I blended some machined surfaces, undercut the trigger guard a little. Did the same on the beaver tail a little. And then I tried my hand at checkering the front and back strap. Bought some new grips and now its off for cerakote.

It seems I'm always tinkerin. I have an old SW model 39 that I have grown fond of that is in need of refinishing. So I thought what the hell, lets try some basic pistol smithing stuff.

So its back from refinishing. NP3 slide and controls, satin black cerakoted frame. Hogue grips. New wolf springs throughout. I'm happy with the results.

Tore apart my old LR-308 to try and spot why I get flyers. Had made scope zeroing a hopeless task, every time a nice group started, it would wander. Have a nice Fulton Criterion barrel that should be MOA or better.

Got the barrel nut off with a bit of heat, it did not seem to have much of any breakaway torque. That bugs me.

Cleaned it all up and found just perceptible slop in the receiver-barrel fit. No bore (ID) gauges, so no idea how much gap there is.

Bought a .308 receiver facing tool and found about 45° on one side of the pin gap was high. Continued gently until I had bare aluminum 360.

Been reading about various ways to tighten the receiver to barrel fit, loctite and shimming. Got some .001" SS shim stock and decided to try that first. Bought a shop torch i was overdue to get and heated the receiver to almost 400° according to the IR temp checker.

slid right over the shim (held in place with rubber band) and had to work fast as things cooled. Popped it all the way on and let it cool.

Absolutely rock solid now. Will reassemble and torque when I get a new Brownells action bar. I certainly expect some improvement in consistency. So frustrating to shoot two shots touching, then a 2" flyer at 100 yds.

That's a fun project, but probably not the issue causing flyers. Many variables that could cause flyers, but at least you can eliminate one of them. My bet is on the ammo.
