The state doesn't care, nobody died, nobody is exerting pressure on them, the news doesn't carry it, it doesn't threaten their election chances or their job, and memory span of American gnats is about 40 seconds, so this guy had the money and time to drag it out. He'll plead guilty to littering and pay a $25 fine.
That's our INjustice system.
Yep.
What most people fail to realize is that the legal $ystem is first and foremost a busine$$. It is all about money, either from the taxpayers who pay the judges, the court staff, and the prosecution and public defender attorneys or from the people who have the money to lawyer up.
In the case of Richard Brothers, he has a house in Cazenovia, NY valued at around $770K and the vacation house in Summerland, Florida that he purchased for $900K in 2021 so he has some wealth that can be transferred. He is represented by attorney Jared Sonnenklar and so far has had five Pretrial/Criminal hearings. By stringing this out, Jared has had the opportunity to rack up the billable hours and ream his client in the pocketbook.
From the point of view of the legal busine$$ this is a successful outcome. The lawyer makes bank, the victim gets a new paint job, and the perp gets a reduced sentence.
