ATVs and highways

There are 3 ways to license your atv in Arizona.
1) Street legal . You can drive on the street all the time. This is the most expensive.
2 ) Off road only , Can not be used on the street. Only cost $25 a year for the off road fee.
3) Part time on road , part time off road. Cost $5 a year for the street tag and $25 a year for the off road. This is how mine are registered.
If you choose option 1 or 3 it has to be insured just like any other vehicle.

Keep in mind that forrest service roads are considered "street" & not "off road". The only time I use my ATV is while camping or hunting but since it is used on forrest service roads I had to license & insure it.

There are two kinds of forest roads. Roads that the vehicle must be street legal and roads where it doesn't have to be street legal.
They are all numbered.
If the numbers on the road sign are horizontal then the vehicle must be street legal.
If the numbers on the sign are vertical then any vehicle is allowed .
They also have roads that are for dirt bikes only . They have a sign and will have a steel post on each side of the road so larger vehicles can't fit through.

The road to Crown King is notorious for Yavapai County deputies trolling for untagged and uninsured ATVs. They generate a lot of income doing it, so no amount of upset complaining folks has affected the program the slightest bit.

Mine is licensed for on-road and off-road use. However, its top speed is 35 mph. I am not about to take it onto a highway. I know the law on golf carts forbids their use on streets with more than a 25 mph (as I recall) speed limit. I assumed there was something similar for ATVs since I don't recall seeing them on roads with 55+ mph speed limits.

I had my 450's on I-17 many times, cop saw the plate and left me alone. One did try to write me for non dot approved tires, he was pissed when he looked and saw it was mounted where he couldn't see it. License it for on and off road. Total BS that my street licensed and insured atv has to have two registrations on it but if I drive my pickup truck down the same road it is legal.

Do both and no Interstate unless you can go the minimum speed limit. Other than that have at it. DOT tires, lights, turn signals, mirrors windshield or DOT approved safety glasses. If you just run glasses be sure to bring paper work that shows they are DOT approved. Cops won't take the time to look them up just write tickets. Make sure your spare is also DOT approved.

According to the Arizona motorcycle operator manual

"Motorcycle operators are required to wear protective glasses, goggles or a transparent face shield, unless the motorcycle is equipped with a protective windshield. Windscreens on sport-style motorcycles are not considered protective windshields."

It says nothing about DOT approved glasses.
I have been stopped a few times while riding an ATV and have never been ask about my glasses.

Making an ATV in AZ street legal only requires a Horn and a rear view mirror. Turn signals are not required. The rider is required to have eye protection but there is no DOT requirement and there is no helmet requirement.

It's one registration. You just have to designate how you intend to use it. IIRC, when I registered my old Rhino I just had to select one of like 3. Mostly on road/some off road, mixed, mostly off road, some on road. It was under $30yr including an OHV stamp.

If you are under 18 years old you must wear a helmet.

Thanks. Haven't had to deal weith that so I forgot to mention it. Yep Under 18 helmet.

That reminded me of another issue. When a manufacturer makes an "age recommendation" like: over 600cc riders should be 16 or above. That has been used as part of liability law suits so while it is not law, I would recommend against tossing the keys to your 1,000cc turboed ATV to a 14 year old even with the helmet.

Ok I have a Yamaha Viking top speed of 56 mph. I got the plate for it . I paid for the on road sticker and my OHV sticker. I put DOT tires on it because if I'm caught on the road not crossing the road I could get a $300 ticket. Now turn signals I like but yes you don't need them just use hand signals. I have a split DOT approved windshield on it. If I open the top I better have my safety glasses on. Most safety glasses meet and exceed DOT approval. I said most. No helmets needed. Horn and mirrors are needed.

No cop is gonna bust you for DOT glasses. Not worth anyone's time, and I'd bet 99% wouldn't even think to try. I couldn't find anything that even suggested there was such a classification.

I will pull the info and get it to.you. so I was out riding in my side by side in AJ. AJ cop pulls me over and said I did not have a wind shield on my rig. I said you are right I don't. He started to right me a ticket. I said my glasses are a substitute for the wind shield. He said they are not DOT approved I said yes they meet and exceed DOT standards and had to prove it to get out of ticket. That's while he was checking my tires for DOT numbers. It was just a fishing expedition but he keep me in one place for 30 min.

Obviously he didn't know who he was talking to.
You should have lit up a cigaret and told him FU and wait for your team leader to advise.

What charge did he write on the citation, specifically requiring DOT approved glasses?

I want to read up on the statute or ordinance he cited for the next time I'm out that way with my ATV.

Wait, ATV and highway do not go together.

On side note, by admitting (freeingly) that you acknowledge the technical aspect/s of the rule/law makes it liable for issue letting you off without ticket.

Ticket OR likely Warnings if you 100% deny knowingly the law/rule. Ticketed, go to court and fight it. Judge will make the final decision and it will go either way.
