AR Stripping Primers

Went to the range with an AR I haven’t shot in a bit. Second shot there was a jam. I look in after locking the bolt and a live round is mostly in, but was stopped by a spent primer stuck above the back end of the case preventing it from properly seating. Any ideas? I have had issues with the bolt before getting stuck so it could just be that.

A blown primer is usually caused by the ammo. Are these reloads? If not what brand of ammo? Is your barrel marked .223 and the ammo is 5.56 which is a bit higher pressure?

Need a bit more info for a good answer.

5.56 marked barrel and I’m pretty sure it was independence 5.56 rounds but I can’t be 100% positive

djbird did you figure out what caused the snafu, was it just the ammo brand?

Loose primer pocket
Non staked primer
Too high cartridge pressure
Bad primer
Bad case

99% of the time this is a ammo problem.

Seen it rarely at the range. Thankfully it didn't lodge itself into the gas key.

Take a look at this. It is a few years ago but I think you will see that blown primers is either pressure or bad primer pocket. It can happen to factory ammo.

I appreciate it! Glad it’s the ammo and not the gun... Thanks for the help! Now to go find another round to load as the home defense

Yup, bad primer pocket, 223, really needs a crimp, independence is not that good
