Apple AirTags - latest threat to gun-owners - burglary risk

I just got finished reading a news article about women being stalked with the use of these new Apple AirTags. An AirTag is a little RFID tracking chip that can be placed almost anywhere and can be kept track of using an i-Phone. Put one in your kid's backpack, and you can check on him throughout the day and see where he's at. But some people looking to victimize women have also been slipping them into or onto their vehicles, following them home digitally and learning where they live.

And sometimes,...the criminals use this to know when the vehicle is away from home,...telling them when it is likely safe to burglarize the place.

That is the risk of us gun owners.

Got any NRA or gun stickers on your car? A criminal would know you have guns to steal, and might put an AirTag on your truck while you're out shopping. They could then figure out where you live [highlight=yellow]AND[/highlight] when you are away.

For that matter, even if your vehicle has no advertising on it that you own guns,...when you park at the gun show,...someone could AirTag your vehicle there.

I'm not sure how one goes about countering this new threat. But it is a growing one as criminals learn about the technology and how to use it.

We put one on the dogs collar. Every time we go near an apple phone on the walk it updates our location to everyone in the family with apple phones.

What range do these xmit out to, in a closed garage with metal door maybe not so strong a signal. Find a radio guy in your neighborhood who may own his own spectrum analyzer that will detect really weak signals. Some one is surely working on home scanner for all models, they got to be xmitting and they can be found

They're bluetooth devices so approximately 30 feet give or take. Apple has an Android app so those phones can participate.

This sounds a lot like the thing going around a few years ago about thieves supposedly sticking colored dot stickers on the back of cars to mark as targets.

Seems every few years some new story comes out and spreads around - yet I don't think there were actually any real accounts or instances.

However, real or fake - this is highlighting a very real future issue. Companies are trying to move towards devices that use shared networks - Amazon's Sidewalk for example, that have devices build a network basically by talking to other devices in hope that there is never an interruption in connectivity. I could see these trackers in the near future utilizing this style of "feature" to allow them to be tracked over much greater distances than standard bluetooth. The abundance of guest wifi networks are also insuring that devices can be connected over great distances. Amazon's Sidewalk came under fire immediately due to it be enabled from the get-go and customers having to opt-out - rather then having to opt-in.

Who knows, maybe future homebuilding will include the Faraday cage option. lol

AirTags are nothing new. Passive trackers have been around for years. What is new is that they are cheap and leverage the pervasive network of cell phone “scanners” to refresh positions.

Of course old school GPS trackers don’t need to be connected to a phone network and are even more reliable but more expensive.

At least Apple notifies you if it detects a tracker traveling with you and allows you to disable it.

These are real, and no joke. A friend had an ex tuck one away in her car during their divorce/custody battle so he could track everywhere she drove.

She got an alert that showed an unknown device and it it showed a map of everywhere she had driven that day.

Big brother WAS watching....

Got a google account they seem to know where I have gone last month as they send a map and link to me. Do you ever sign out of google account? Pretty easy I am surprised some android app guy has not got app fu going as that will be a giga dollar seller at $5. This will be good for spy shops, you can buy all you need to find most any kinds of electronic wizardy....bring money.

My take is you would do all the same things you did before these type of technologies existed.

1. Good locks, deadbolts and enhanced striker plates on all doors.
2. All weapons in a safe or gun cabinet when you are away from home.
3. Secure windows
4. Dogs are great a great deterrence or cats if their the size of a tiger

For thieves like this speed is the main thing - even if they know you're not home they will move on if there are too many variables slowing them down.

Lastly use all these fancy wireless technologies in your favor. I have motion sensing camera/floodlights that will ping my phone any time a person enter the perimeter I have set. I can then view what's up and even start a siren or directly talk to the intruder to let them know their gig is up. And oh by the way they are being recorded

I worry about police families which have the black and blue flag sticker on their autos.

Call me crazy and paranoid but:

There are people out there who want do do harm to any and all police and their families.

Everyone should be proud of being part of a police family and one should not be concerned about it.

It would make a bigger impact if families were targeted instead of the officers themselves.

But with today's attitudes towards police and their families I think it may be prudent to remove black and blue flags from windows.

Remember, all the guns in the world are of no use if locked up or if an unexpected attack occurs.

Please don't send me hate messages regarding my post, this is just my personal concern for police families.
