I'm still researching SUV's and am looking hard at the full sized Toyota Sequoia's for a new [to me] ride. Seems they get really good reviews for reliability, build quality, and people generally like them. I'm wondering if any of you have one and what's your opinion?
The one main negative I've heard a lot is they're thirsty- not very good gas mileage, and you have to get that timing belt/water pump changed out at 90,000 mi.
Not as many out there and hard to find a good one without a gazillion miles on it.

What say y'all? Thanks for your input,

One of my biz partners has one, doesn't pass too many fuel stations, nice ride, comfy on a long one, he seems to like all but the drinking at every opportunity.

Went with a 5.7 for timing chain as much as I wanted more power. I get 12mpg hauling 5+ people every time we use it. Purchased used and low miles even then, there was a hefty price to pay.

Went with the fully loaded Platinum after test driving the full array of trim levels available.

I’ve towed a lightweight camper trailer with ease.

Pros:
-it’s a Toyota
-2nd Gen body still looks similar to current production
-platinum has great features and upgrades, like built in window shades
-AC really works well
-At home on the Highway
-platinum is exceptionally quiet, more sound deadening materials used
-Turning radius is better than my Tacoma
-2,365 cup holders


Cons:
-12mpg
-Tech is “meh” (but I don’t care)
-more costly (tires, fuel, insurance, registration) than a car but on par w SUV’s
-not parking lot friendly

Devildoc, thanks for the candid comments and the pros/cons. Like I told rj the fuel mileage isn't a deal breaker and the Toyotas were even recommended to me by a mechanic friend.
I might pm you If I come up with some other specific questions or concerns and thanks very much for that offer.

My folks had a 2003 Limited for 16 years. It didnt have a mechanical failure until 220k miles, then needed water pump, fuel pump etc. AC was good, it got around 14mpg.
 
I recently picked up an LX470 (Lexus equivalent of the Land Cruiser), and I seriously considered a Sequoia when I was shopping around. The Sequoia was a little bigger than what I wanted, but I actually thought they were priced much better than many other Toyotas. They seemed to depreciate more than some of the other models from Toyota which makes it a little easier to get into a used one.

I had a friend that had a Sequoia, and he loved it. I drove it a handful of times, and I thought it would be awesome for a long road trip other than that mileage.

Regarding the timing belt, it should cost $1300-$1600ish to have the timing belt and water pump replaced. If they don't have documentation of it being done or the sticker in the engine compartment showing the mileage when it was last done, just assume it hasn't been serviced and use that in your negotiations.
 
Same as the tundra that I have. They are thirsty. 13-14mpg but I'm running 35' tires. Good SUVs though. My sister has a gen1 with 200+ miles. Still running strong. I hear the ride is a little soft. Seats 8 with bench seats. Power is good and so is the toyota reliability. Just keep up with the basic maintenance.

Used cars are pricey right now. Toyotas seem to be up there too. But they can be found at a fair price. As others have said look for maintenance documentation. Those engines (both 5.7 and 4.6) are proven.
 
Did a lot of miles in Motorolas' Navigator fleet the gas cost was PHENOMINAL it was 2001. Those beasts likely come in real close on mileage whoever makes them. They are a working tool choose wisely.
 
The 1st gen Sequoias are phenomenal vehicles. Like all Toyotas, they run and run and run. Maintenance costs are low, and there is a lot of room.

You should pick one up if you have a chance. You will enjoy it

I'm not a real big fan of the 2nd gens, but, I'm sure they work just fine

CarFax what you like, and if they had it dealer serviced, it will be documented.
 
I have a 2010 and love it. Bought it used with 50k miles, has 115k now(just getting broken in for a Toyota). No issues with it. Went with the Platinum trim level which does have all the bells and whistles. Extremely comfortable for long road trips. Only negative is what everyone else has stated, it is very thirsty!
