I'm thinking about one of these for another vehicle. Looking for used in the 2003-2010 range. Any of you that have or have had one that can give me some insight about the good, bad [or ugly] that I oughta be aware of.
I know they don't get very good gas mileage, but it's not gonna be a commuter ride.
We're wanting something that's got comfortable seats for longer than just to Fry's or Walmart- one I could get in and cruise to the White mts. or Havasu and not be bitchin' about how much my back hurts! Damn, it sucks getting older!
Any of you have any suggestions or opinions? Years to stay away from? Stuff I should look out for or be aware of?
Maybe the scariest question: Ok, I can't hardly believe I'm asking this but: A dealer I can trust for a quality ride and not get screwed? [Yeah, I know, I can hear it now--"are you sh11ting me!?.]

Thanks,
Buckshot Bill

Bill,

Those interiors were not great from the start and prob haven’t held up so have some room
In the budget for addressing that.

My uncle still has one. It’s a Denali level trim and its worn out. Everything you touch went from Tan to peeling back and exposing the black plastic.

Yeah prob some gems to be had but that’s my experience w those rides.

if you're gonna go big, just do a suburban, had subs for almost 45 years, wore three out, best for long rides, storage can camp in back if third seat isn't around and fold down, all of our had the best freaken seats, i'd still own one but in 07 went to trade old one in on a new one and ended up driving out in a new diesel, it was almost 18 grand cheaper than a new sub.

i like the big full size especially for trips and travel, and when all the kids come home to visit, we do rent them when they all show up
best with a good find

I have had several Suburbans , all four wheel drive.
I now have a Tahoe , two wheel drive.
They have all been very good vehicles.
The Tahoe of course gets much better gas mileage being shorter and not four wheel drive.
They are the only Chevy's I would buy.

All my dogs like it also. The ride in the back seat with their heads out the window.
The only back seat drivers I don't mind.

Hey, thanks for all the replies so far. Devildoc, I saw in my searching [so far] about the interior/dash peeling- sounds like just the nature of the beast, but good to know anyway.

rj, you kinda confirmed what I've heard about the seats and them being comfortable, but that's still good to hear from a real owner and not just internet bs.

Ballistic therapy, that's also encouraging, and makes me feel a little better about taking the plunge, and hell, it's all about someone's "FEELINGS" anymore, isn't it!

Keep 'em coming.
Thanks, BB

Are you only interested in the full size rides, or is a Trailblazer/Envoy size and option? The interior lay out is very similar. I have a '04 Sierra and a '07 Trailblazer. Some of the stuff is exactly the same.

The Sierra is a crewcab 4x4 diesel. The Trailblazer being a bit smaller is just "easier" to drive.

I have a 99 Tahoe Z71 5.7. Tahoes have issues with the Passlock System. They go out often and you are stuck for 10 minutes while it resets. Chevy, so far, has no fix for it after all these years for models 1998-2007. Spend more and get better quality from a Toyota

Like double.

We have owned a few of both, great vehicles.

Friend of mine was selling his Yukon XL forget what year etc.....Ill try to get ahold of him and pm you if its available.

Haven't owned a Yukon, but have owned 2 Avalanches. Had an 02 and currently own an 07. Great vehicles. Butload of room sitting on a suburban frame. I like the versatility of using the truck bed. Drop the back cab and you can haul alot of stuff in the bed. Take out the the rear window and you increase the size of your load.

They actually make a tent that goes over the bed for overnights.

I forgot. When you go shooting, firearms, ammo, targets, stands, coolers and whatever else is covered and unseen.

If you can find a clean 98 or 99 they are cheap as hell. 5.7 vortec is a rock solid motor. If maint has been done ( which is ALOT ) it'll be reliable and comfortable for a loooong time. Bought my 98 z71 with a nice interior 8 years ago, put a couple grand in maint ( did it all in the garage or it would've cost a fortune ) and it's been rock solid. Complete front end, gear box, shocks, complete brake system, upper and lower intake gaskets, MPFI injector upgrade, cooling system, lift kit, tires. I have about 8k into sale price included. I expect to do the trans sooner or later as it has 178,000 miles. 4L60 isn't the best trans.

I had an 04 Tahoe that I daily drove for about 6 years. It went from being garage kept to sitting outside in my driveway. The heat wreaks havoc on those things. Leather got trashed, just about every engine gasket leaked, electrical gremlins started creeping up, various sensors went out, A/C compressor went out, etc. Things that happen with any 12-15 year old car. I’d buy a newer one, but not an older one unless it’d been garaged and babied it’s whole life. That said, it is comfy. My buddy is 6’8” & 325, and all he buys are Tahoes and Denalis as those are the only vehicles he said he fits in.

Thanks guys, for all the info. I figured if I could get one a little older at a decent price and decent shape, I can afford to put some $$ into one. Now the hard part is finding it!

The used car market is crazy now, but you can still snatch up deals if you're fast enough. I sold a car a couple of weeks back faster than I've ever sold one before, and I just ran out to San Diego to get a Land Cruiser this week that people from all over the country were trying to buy.

I absolutely hate Facebook, but I'm only on there for the buying and selling groups. There are a lot of groups specific to certain vehicle types, so maybe that would be of use to you.

Good luck on your hunt!
