I have a 66-2 .357 with the initials n.j d.c. engraved on the side. Its not super deep, I'm looking for a way to get rid of it maybe sanding and polishing the gun? Any help would be amazing. Thanks guys

Seems like 'New Jersey Corrections Dept' might be a fair guess. Typically, such agency markings go pretty deep. Where, exactly, on the gat is it stamped?

I thought the same but the engraving was not done well at all. It is on the left side above the trigger and below the cylinder.

With the engraving what do you guys think its value might be.

If it is horribly scrawled with an electric pencil and looks like a ham-fisted illiterate monkey couldn't color in the lines,...then yes, it would detract from the value. Pictures would help us here, but for myself, sight unseen, I'd say it makes it about a $400 gun.

But, if you sand it off and/or wear it down,...then you need to cover up what you have done, or it will look even uglier.

I knew a fellow once who had his stainless Colt 1911 confiscated as evidence in a burglary case when it was recovered from the burglar. But the police ENGRAVED the case # on the top of the slide. He had access to a machine shop, so after scouring with sand paper enough to remove the case #, he then sand blasted the entire pistol, giving it a very tactical frosted matte finish. It looked new and from the factory, although Colt never did a complete matte stainless model. He was proud how it turned out and actually preferred it to its original finish. I'm guessing it might work on your revolver as well.

The new site hosts pictures from your computer or phone pretty easily. No need for hosting sites like photobucket. Let's see what it looks like.

I traded a lc9 that I picked up for 100 bucks, its a win for me. I love how the gun shoots but hate looking at the engraving.

That engraving is not going to have the guys on the S&W forum paying extra for it.
IMO it will be hard not to make it look worse unless the entire gun is refinished.

It's to damn bad! The gun itself looks in great shape ... Except for that engraving.

Why would anyone do that!! Still good trade I think for a nice shooter prelock.

Engraving kills resale and it's deep enough to look worse if you try and fix it. Shoot it and have fun with it.

If you want to sell it, I know a guy that might be interested. He would probably like the "character" the engraving brings...

It depends on what he offers lol. I have a standing offer at 600.00 just not sure if I want to get rid of it just yet.

Guess you could just buy a cheap engraver doodad and scribble on it some more!!

Then its ART!

the other way is to add more engraving to where it looks like it came from Nogales... then come up with a cool story...

ETA... An offer of $600 seems to already be at full price for a common 357 like that, even without the marking - so you better grab it fast if you don't like the gun as-is... or else dump more $$ into it that you will never get back just forthe optics of it...

I'm betting that it is a real NJDC gun and someone who collects that stuff will pay full price for it... A lot of places used electric pencil to mark property for later theft ID- it was cheap and any monkey could do it. As mentioned, stuff seized in crime investigations were also often marked, but not as nicely as that... THAT actually looks like a pretty good job considering it was likely free hand. Military guns are another place you will find electric pencil "art".

I have a buddy that had one that had horrible initials on it and he had Matt Mclaren fill it and then bead blast the gun. It came out pretty badass
