I still have a couple of 40 S&W's and if a nice SIG or Smith in 40 came along I'd likely snatch it up.

Gotta say .. I love my sigs but ... cost to fun its hard to beat the M&P 40C. Still really really like that gun and you can always stick in the 15 round mags to give you a full size grip.

Where you at Jack?
I think I still have a 5 gallon bucket or two of the stuff, once fired Federal brass.

I'm in Mesa by Fiesta Mall. You don't mind donating some of it?

i have a gazillion but don't shoot'm ammo costs too much, hehehe, yeah right.

don't reload 40 but crapload of 10mm

It's been about 20yrs since I played with the caliber. I bought one recently, a Beretta Storm. I liked the pistol, it was an OK deal, and .40 is somewhat more available right now in all of the hoopla. Well, nothing much has changed, LOL. Still have cratered primers across several factory loads, indicating pressure issues. Still have .45 level muzzle flip, without the .05 extra hole, LOL.

Cant talk to the muzzle flip but I have shot a TON of factory 40 and probably at this point close to 1000 reloads and I never have any cratered primers. Was out with a board member yesterday and always examine my brass before my wife deprimes and the primers looked fine.

Not a blistering round with 7.2gr of longshot and a 165gr bullet with mag primer but even my SD ammo at 9.3 gr of longshot with 155 bullet and standard primer have not shown any signs of over pressure.

Factory range ammo doesnt come in at the pressures I load sometimes but no issues with factory at all.

I just went and checked the brass from yesterday again after reading your post and .. no cratering. Nice strikes.

What brand of ammo or primers were you using when you saw the cratering?

Not a gun smith but .. could it be someone tinkered with the firing pin or spring on the gun?? I don't know enough about the storm to offer anything more helpful.

I still have one.

The round is not "bad". But neither is it "great". 10mm, however,...now you're talking.

To me, its greatest liability is it is designed in a way that makes it more readily go KABOOM. Short and stubby, and already operating at higher pressures than 9mm or .45, it doesn't take much of a mistake in quality control to grenade one of these suckers. Despite that smaller hole, it doesn't suppress any easier than .45 because it runs at such higher pressures (essentially double what the .45 operates at).

To me, it's greatest asset is that it fits in pistol envelopes meant for 9mm, and therefore can be had in pistols that are better suited to smaller hands. Thus, if you have a small stature shooter who progresses to being able and willing to step up in caliber, but a 1911 or G21 is just too fat a grip,...there is likely something in .40 that can fit that shooter.

I have two 1911's in .40 and am building a third.

I have not yet set up a press to reload it because of an upcoming move, but I expect to use 4.4gr of Universal behind a 180gr coated bullet. I've shot a buddy's 200gr load which is very gentle and might move to that bullet weight after getting through my 2k of 180grs.

Thankfully I can process .40 and 9mm on the same machine so the loading should go smoothly.

Had a HK USP40 for a good while, just to have a .40 S&W.

Ashamed to say I never used the thing, no ranges near me in SoCal at the time.

The round seemed like an answer not asked. Other than maybe an auto equivalent to the .357 Mag. Of course the .40 S&W was not, being a watered down 10mm.

I got the impression the big deal at the time was the FBI and all adopting it.

Stuck with the .45 ACP for now, unless i get the itch to try a 10mm conversion on my Glock 30.
