I’m trying to reassemble a project I’ve been working on. Got everything put together but I’m having a problem with the slide not moving fully forward after assembly.

If you look at the pic you can see the thumb safety does not line up correctly. I tried another slide on the same lower and same issue. Tried different slide and slide internals on the same lower and I’m having the same issue.

Any ideas?

Have a great, gun carryin', Kenpo day

Look at the firing pin retainer at the back of the slide. Has it dropped down to impede the slide going forward?

Another possibility: the slide stop is not through the hole in the barrel link. Pull it out and try again?

No issues with firing pin retainer. I’ve triple checked the slide stop is in correctly.

Definitely works on the original upper. Forgot to mention the lower is not its matching pair. All other parts are original. Only thing that changed is the bare slide.

This.

This is likely it because I can see the dings from the link on slide stop from me racking it. Thanks!

Next question: can I swap barrel lugs and fix this?

After looking through some videos it seems I would have to cut the bottom lugs to get this barrel to fit properly. Is that correct?

Correct. 3/16 round file if you don't have access to the proper lug cutting tool. Go slow and make sure you don't overcut the lug.

Before you start cutting, if you think the link is too long, you can buy links of different lengths from Brownells.

Put the bare slide on the table upside down so you are looking at the lug recesses. Lay the barrel in and see if the lugs on the barrel fit into the lug recesses. If they do, then don't cut anything; just buy a shorter link.

Slide stop pin out, barrel and link in, push the slide fully forward. Look in the slide stop pin hole. How much "lug" is intruding in the hole. Don't need the link at all for this.

Any follow up report?

Another thought: Is the barrel hood maybe too long or too wide for the ejection port?

When I got a Wilson Combat barrel, I had to file off a bit on the back of the hood to get it to close.

They did say gunsmithing may be required.

I have no update but I suspect the barrel lugs are the issue. They may need to be cut to fit the slide. However I have chosen to meet the barrel on the appropriate slide and purchase a new barrel for the plated slide. It will take some time but I will post an update once this is resolved.
