What wears on a revolver

I have been looking at getting a 357 smaller frame revolver for a while, like the looks of the ruger speed or security six. What should I look for as far as wear parts? I dont know what typically wears in a revolver.

The easiest checks are cylinder play and forcing cone chatter.

What is the function of the forcing cone? At what point is one too worn to be worth purchasing? I would have though a 357 revolver would need a lot of rounds put through it before it would wear to the point that it isnt accurate

Maybe someone else has but I have never seen a shot out or cracked forcing cone. If you see chatter marks the gun could be out of timing. I shoot a lot of revolver but it's about 3/4 38 or 38+p and shoot magnums the other 1/4 or maybe less. Tough to break em.

Is there something used you have your eye on at a good price! If your not opposed to new because of the associated paperwork the Ruger Sp101 and my favorite the gp100 are hard to beat and have a no bs warranty.

I haven't checked current pricing in a bit but I got the sp101 about a year and change ago and think it was around $500

I haven't owned a Ruger Security Six for a very long time but the last one I had was just starting to have timing issues. I recall the pawl was worn and possibly even the star on the cylinder's extractor was getting worn. Even way back then Ruger was no longer offering any parts for them.

I would imagine online sellers of gun parts like Numrich, Jack First, etc or even some Ebay sellers might have some parts for them at times. However, I'm sure they're getting scarce since the guns haven't been built since the late eighties and were never overly popular back in the day. BTW-the Security Six was an adjustable sight gun while the Speed Six were fixed sight models.

The GP and the 686 are pretty damn close. I have the 3" GP but have had a 6 and a few 4". The 3" for me is about as perfect as you can get and I have carried it concealed, though it is not deep concealment and it is my walking the desert gun. I freagin love that gun.

Don't know what your intended purpose is but I have an airwieght 642 and even with very warm 38 +p it's a shooter and I can group nicely at 7 yds but ... It is a five shot.

I too like the looks of the security six and eyeball them when they come up.

There are some good YouTube vids on what to look for in a used revolver. Might want to check some of those out.

Once you fired a smith with a custom shop trigger or even factory is good, nelson ford is cheaper than smith wesson and he likely will do the same to ruger guns as well.

Im looking for a carry gun when im out hunting. It will be open/outside waistband carry. I definitely want it to be chambered in at least 357 or else I will just continue to carry my 9 hunting. Nelson ford does some damn good work, my dad had a 686 done by him.

I have a pre 70 Colt the the previous owner had Ford work on.
I bought it from him in the mid 90s.

If it's a hunting carry own then you definitely consider a GP 100.

Really, if cared for not much wears out on a revolver other than the finish.
Abuse one with lack of pm or beating it to death with overpowered reloads, and you get what you expect.
I have several 3rd generation hand me down S&Ws and Colts that are every bit reliable and accurate as the day they were made.
As for a desert carry, I’d go with a full sized rather than compact.
A Ruger or Smith with at least a 4” barrel in .357 or better, I carry a Colt Trooper MK IV with a 6” barrel when I’m bow hunting.

I was definitely thinking 3-4” barrel. I started looking at the sp101 and they make it in a 6 shot 327mag. Seems to have similar energy with lighter weight bullets since its loaded to higher pressures. Any experience with 327 mag over 357mag?
