Illinois Man Chases Down His Stolen Sedan, Shoots Two Teens, Killing One
By Bill Galluccio
Jan 4, 2021
A 35-year-old man from Illinois shot two teens he suspected of stealing his vehicle. The Lake County Sheriff's Office said that the man located his car early in the morning on January 3 after reporting it missing on December 30.
The man, who was not identified because he has not been charged with a crime, started to chase after his black Chevrolet sedan. After about a mile, the sedan ran out of gas, forcing two 17-year-old males to exit the vehicle. They were confronted by the car's owner and got into a physical altercation.
During the struggle, somebody pulled out a gun, and the two teens were shot. When police arrived, they found one of the teens deceased in a parking lot, and the other was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. The older man "sustained minor non-gunshot wounds" but refused treatment.
Investigators are trying to determine who pulled out the gun and whether or not it was legally registered in the state.
"Sheriff's detectives are working to determine this as well ...," Sgt. Chris Covelli told the Chicago Tribune in an email. "One would need a FOID card and possibly a CCL to legally possess the firearm. I can't say at this time whether or not anyone involved possessed those."
Officials are treating the case as a homicide investigation and did not rule out bringing charges against the shooter. Covelli told the Tribune that it is too early to determine if the shooting was a case of self-defense.

When I was on the job there, 17 years old was "TAINT".
Illinois laws said 1-16 Years old was juvenile, another law said 18 years old was an adult.
A 17 year old taint adult and taint juvenile.

Re: He's about to be crucified
This is bad for the fellow if it was his gun. The prosecutor is going to say that the man's intentions were to track down and shoot the thieves, and take justice in his own hands.
They are gonna say that it would have been easier to contact the police and tell them where the vehicle and occupants were!
It will be in the fellows favor if one of the teens pulled the gun.
In any case... It's a tragedy that no one wants to go through.

I guess he was behind on car insurance payments. Not worth what’s he’s going to have to deal with the rest of this life.

Re: He's about to be crucified
This is one reason why I attended the CCW to learn about the laws. CCW instructor emphasized that in AZ use of lethal force in defense of property is very limited such as your's or someone else's life is endanger. An example with a car being stolen was used; no lethal force if someone is stealing only your car , if the car is occupied with a person (e.g. your child) lethal force is a go. The main take away was if you use lethal force, you'll go to trial then jury decides if the actions were what a reasonable person would have done. I believe the law is ARS 13-408 (https://www.azleg.gov/ars/13/00408.htm). Bottom line yeah criminals should not be stealing the car, and the car owner better know what they're doing when using lethal force if not the car owner may end up as the criminal.
