IDPA - First Timer

I’m planning to attend my first IDPA match in February at the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club and wanted to see if anyone had any advice.
I’ve been reading through the rule book and watching videos, but is there anything else or anything Phoenix specific I should have in mind?

I have my firearm, ammo, ordered my mag holders, have my trusty ear and eye protection, and will be bringing along a sweater for my concealment garment.

99.9% of the shooters at prgc use some form of vest for concealment garment.

Have your draw technique practiced and re-holster without flagging your body. No appendix carry in IDPA.

Read the rule book, the sport is penalty heavy if you
****-up.

Shoot for "down zero." Hits in the +1 & +3 add up.

Classifier match is last Saturday of the month. Shoot it. It's good practice.

Bring 100 rounds for the match and you'll take some home after.

Pay at the door. Let the staff know you're new and they'll assign someone to give you the range brief.

Range is cold, don't bring a hot gun to the line. Ever.

The State match is this Saturday, check it out. Bring eye & ear protection.

come on out to cowtown every Wednesday to. I'm always out there. there adding a lot of props to the stages recently. PLUS you can cut the lights and run it dark if you have a weapons mounted light

Is there something about shooting “practice?”
I’m coming from an angle of just shooting under stress, notsomuch competeing and trying to have the best score, or beat someone else.
I think I’ve heard the term practice matches before.

The Club does run a "practice match," when you get to shoot the stages as many times as you wish.
Lots of folks take advantage to get more trigger time on the "circus" props that are commonly used.
Check the schedule on the club calendar.

The only stress that exist at a match is what you bring to the line. There literally is no stress at a match. People should stop saying that.

All cancelled for the time being. As for training matches are a good addition. Prgc a friendly club I’m there all the time. They do add stress and require marksmanship under time pressure as well as pointing out any weapons handling flaws you may have. There is a reason many who shoot for a living are competing.

I was a bit nervous my first time but I was placed on a squad with some supportive experienced shooters and I had a great time. Making sure you are following the rules and not getting disqualified should be your goal the first time out. I would also ask questions if you are not sure about something.

Is the IDPA the same as the practical shooting course at Rio Salado? I was trying to navigate their site and was having a hell of a time trying to understand the different groups and such. This is something I would really like to get into as well.

Currently, all of Rio's matches are canceled in May according to their calendar.

PRGC is waiting to see what guidance the State will offer before hosting matches again.

I used to shoot IDPA and loved it. Lots of fun and great training. Highly recommended provided you can find and afford the ammo. Fortunately it seems that ammo is becoming available again. Right before COVID-19 ammo shortages I was thinking about rejoining PR&G to participate in IDPA and maybe 3 gun. Have fun!
