Wolves Coming to Cochise County?

This is the place to talk about general outdoor activities like fishing, off-roading, hiking, camping, hunting, mountain climbing, etc...

Wolves Coming to Cochise County?

#1

Post by jls in az »

Apparently there's a plan to release Mexican Gray Wolves in Cochise County. The following paragraph is from the Mexican Gray Wolf Update from Game and Fish-

On June 15, representatives from the AZGFD met with the Graham/Cochise Cattle Growers Association at their annual meeting. Jim deVos was the keynote speaker primarily covering future Mexican wolf release potential in Cochise County and compensation programs. During the question and answer portion of the schedule, the majority of the questions were focused on concerns related to the Wildlife Service’s Standards of Evidence used to determine cause of death in livestock depredations.

I see they are spending more time negotiating with the ranchers this time. They really have no choice, since it was them that eradicated the wolves last time they were introduced. (None admit that, of course, but that's the fact of the matter.)

There are about 40 stray cats in my area if you want to get some cats to deal with the mouse problem in the area.

I'm thinking you watched other videos? With all the wildlife we get in our front and backyard we definitely don't have a rodent problem. Although if you wanted to get rid of the strays I'm sure they would be welcome around here. They're always hungry coyotes, mountain lions and bobcats that would love them.

We actually had one in our backyard at the water fountain once, hasn't happened again. They are huge and you can tell that it's not domestic or just a "large" coyote since they tip the scales double what a coyote would weigh.

Why are they doing this? I don't have an opinion on it, I'm just naiive and curious about it.

If they become an issue, the ranchers will deal with it just like they have been doing for years.
