QR codes

Yep, I'm behind the tech curve,,, but while perusing GB for a Python, I saw one with a dimpled in QR code, ostensibly to replace the serial number.

while I understand the inventory advantages of that from a mfrs standpoint, I worry that that can be misused maybe by merely punching another dot or two for nefarious reasons.

Is that possible ?

There is redundant data in a QR code. It would take a lot of effort to change, let's say a "1" to a "2" or something similar. It would be much easier to obliterate the entire code, which you would have to do since the redundancy has the serial number in there a couple times.

But then you're back to old-school, grinding off a serial number.

I had a trade show badge with a QR code that contained my contact information. Out of curiosity I took a sharpie and started filling in sections. I was shocked how good it was at still displaying the correct information even when highly modified.
