Savage model 24

I am considering getting a combination rifle/shotgun for hunting birds and medium to large game, and a friend recently told me about the Savage 24. Any of you have experience with these? I am curious on how they function and if there are any parts that commonly break down. Also what other combination guns are out there?

To me they always feel heavy ,,,,and the generally kind of expensive for what you get.
They are kind of cool but I lose interest pretty quick.

I don't know about the 24 but the current version is called the Model 42 and was something I looked into a while back.

I was told that the rifle and shotgun barrels weren't regulated well to the sights and tend to shoot to different points of impact.

I used to have a 24C (compact takedown model, .22LR/20g.) and it was the bee's knees. I regret selling it.

The breakopen action with the thumb-cocked hammer is not strong enough for a really powerful rifle cartridge, so I think the most powerful rifle cartridge you could get was .30/30 -- which IMO is not a bad choice. They made a Model 2400, .308/12g, but it was a different design, quite heavy, and quite expensive.

They never made a .22LR over 12g, which I thought would be ideal.

You could do a lot with a .22 over 12ga. I think for price point though I am going to get a H&R 12 and maybe a .22 adapter.

Since you have to carry around the adapter, I would suggest something like a Marlin 60 instead. Sleek and easy to slip into a pack or a Papoose if you want to go really compact.

The adapters I’m looking at are only 8” long. I have a 10/22 if I need to bring a full size .22

8"? Better off just strapping a .22 pistol on your hip.

A pistol would just add bulk and weight.

I got a model model 24 22/410 for my 13th birthday, back when Coast to Coast was around and sold guns. That little gun became my primary small game and nuisance critter shooter for many years and still have it almost 40 years latter. The rim fire is pretty accurate, the shotgun takes some practice to become proficient due to the "sight" picture obstructing your view.
I found the barrels to be lined up pretty well and didn't notice any issues with POI. I have owned two other 24's, a 357 and a 222, both over 20 ga. Those didnt stick around long due to the balance of them.
There are some other variants from other manufactures out there, I believe Valmet made a 12ga. Model with medium caliber chamberings. Check out Google or Gunbroker.
