From what I have read, this is all supposedly in reaction to and a rejection of Iranian influence that has been slowly co-opting the government and institutions, attempting to make Iraq its client state.

I'm certain Uncle Sam had NOTHING to do with it.

Bush and his neocon cronies (Dicky, Condi, Wolfie, and Rummy) only succeeded in creating a Greater Iran when they launched their foolish invasion of Iraq. Saddam Hussein kept the majority Shiite population in check and was the archenemy of neighboring Iran. The towelheads in Iran must have thought that the invasion of Iraq was a gift from Allah; without lifting a finger their mortal enemy had been deposed and they were the undisputed power in the region. America wasted billions of dollars (much of which went to Cheney's chums at Halliburton in no-bid contracts) and the blood of many American soldiers.

Iran has made good use of the power vacuum created by Bush and his buddies. They have forged closer ties to the majority Shiite population in Iraq and have had free rein to export their brand of Islamic revolution to other countries.
