TSMC Delays Arizona Factory Opening Due to Insufficient Skilled Local Talent

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world’s largest chipmaker, will delay production at its new Arizona chip plant to 2025 due to a shortage of skilled labor.

The lack of skilled labor is no joke.
I work construction and see it every day.
I have been in construction for over 40 years and the quality of work is worse today than I have ever seen.
It is not only the unskilled labor , it is also a communication problem.
Nobody speaks english any more.

ding ding ding....helluva lot of truth above...I am finding the same thing in the military, then factor in DEI and we are SO behind our adversaries.

And most likely your HR will not let you do anything about the poor performance.

Heard rumors about the language and culture issues. Taiwan never heard of OSHA too.

Won't be long, China/Russia will see exactly how weak our military is and decide to act. We'll be crushed if we do anything outside CONUS. Here at home, I'm hoping the 1% of the 3% will act.

Have a great, gun carryin', Kenpo day

Unfortunately, a vast majority of people in AZ nowadays are uneducated dumbasses. I have given up hope of this state ever getting above Walmart status

Sad part is most of them make the conscientious choice to be uneducated dumbasses.

Clearly confirmation of how far back we have gone just in the last 4+ years. These guys are no dummies and did a great deal of reseach prior to landing here in Phoenix. Labor pool would have been on top of the list along with partnering with local education sites. I would bet they are looking at the dynamics of our pre-post covid work force and have the facts in hand. In addition our lean towards left makes the future smell like the states they did not consider. Gotta believe the board is doing some serious recalculations of its profit-returns and how the future plays out here. This would be only the first shoe to drop as several smaller satilite facilities are also effected with their time-line move.

This problem is not going away for any of us.

The construction labor pool in Arizona has sucked for over 20 years. I have been in it over 40 years.
Yes it got worse due to the Chinese flu, but it was already really bad.

IMO TSMC thought that they could come in and pay above scale and all their problems would be solved.
I have been on a job the last 3 years that has lost a lot of people to TSMC and most of them were worthless morons.

TSMC is at the same time building a sister facility to this one up in Oregon. If memory serves, they broke ground there about 6 months before ours, so it would stand to reason that their crews up there are likely a similar amount of time ahead on their project. I wonder if they are running into similar issues there. I also wonder if they are looking to spare a few guys there who have completed certain stages to now travel down here and help out with those same evolutions.
