Jewel Hurtado first heard of Bernie Sanders when she was 17, still a high school student and trying to figure out whom to vote for in California's 2016 Democratic presidential primary.

The Central Valley resident watched a video of the Vermont senator talking about challenges confronting the working class and people of color, people like many in her small agricultural town. He spoke about equality for the LGBTQ community, a group she knows well as a bisexual woman. His message about universal healthcare coverage resonated with Hurtado, who was uninsured at the time.

"Yeah, maybe he was just another old white man politician," she said, "but that’s not what it was about for me. It was about the fact that I felt seen."

She wanted to push for those changes, too. So she ran to be a delegate with the Democratic Party when she was 18. In 2018, she launched a bid for a seat on the Kingsburg City Council and won by eight votes. - Emphasis mine.

Hurtado is just one of a legion of young progressives inspired by Sanders who have set out to run for local, state and federal positions to advocate for issues the senator helped bring into the mainstream conversation during his 2016 and 2020 presidential bids. From the Central Valley to Lewiston, Maine, they have won public office so they could advocate for changes both small and sweeping.

Blah blah blah socialism is "brave and inspiring" ad nauseam.

The question is what are we doing to counter this? How do we get our kids involved to counter this?

If we do not act, we are going to get overrun.

The difference with the progressive left, is that they are motivated and undeterred by failure (being the fact they are losers, they are used to this). While we sit around with our dicks in hands they are running for office and winning city council spots and so forth. This is exactly how it vaulted people such as Kyrsten Sinema into the national spotlight.

The biggest problem we face is that we are all individuals and it's hard to get us to agree on issues. I just wish we could be united with certain things we all believe in to just hold the line.

Ask them to present just one example of where socialism has ever worked. They won't be able to.

There a a huge number of examples of where it was tried and didn't work.

Proof, logic, and history don't matter. These people don't get past reading the headline, tagline, etc and the thinking that their own thought/feelings trumps all rational form of actually understanding or knowing what they are in favor of.

It doesn't matter how many facts, or how much history you use to prove they are misguided, ignorant, or do not understand - the response is always "well I feel that....."

^This.

It's weird though...my soon to be 13 year old son has a better understanding of the world than these kids do. His whole goal is to simply open a gym, live there and train all day. A very simple life that makes him happy.

He is the exception but not the norm unfortunately.

I am trying to think tank this on how we can get that generation to WANT freedom and risk over handouts.

Well your soon to be 13yr old son has a goal which is good, but to date, his father has provided for all of his weight lifting equipment, accessories, supplements, clothing, food, etc. Ask him where he will get the $25k ($ just a guess on my part) to open a GYM (in a leased building that his landlord will certainly raise the cost at the end of the term) ? Where will he have a place to live and Train then ?

Sometimes kids have to be pushed or nudged to get them focused. The little girl in that article has never had to survive by herself. She is still young just like your son, but since this country changed its constitution in 1971 to allow 18yr olds to vote (I did vote against it, I'm an old fart), we have to live with the consequences.

My feeling is that your son will figure it out sooner than later because at his age he has a GOAL which is good. Some people take a long time to challenge a GOAL People without a goals in life just wander around aimlessly.

Can we fix the problem your talking about, NO ! Since there has never been a country like ours ever in history, it will be our fault (Yours & Mine) for letting it get away. Do the best that you can do being a parent. Provide leadership, knowledge, etc, and then hope for the best. That's all we can do.

You are right. 100%

I mean this is a gun forum so I didn't bring it up because it's not germane per se but he wants to have an MMA/Jiu Jitsu Gym. He is actually a nationally well known competitor who wins a lot. He has a decent little following online and on IG, he has sponsors that help pay for things and he does product reviews of gear and things like that as a couple of companies provide him things for free. He is starting a podcast so he can talk about those things endlessly to people who are interested so he is going about it the right way and building a little brand for himself.
