My cousin just bought a new PSA AR-15 with a 16" barrel.

He's asking me my thoughts on a good scope for it. Scopes aren't my thing....So
He will probably be doing target shooting from 200 to 400 yards or so.
He's willing to put 6 to 8 hundred dollars in a good scope.

If you AR guys out there have any suggestions I would like to pass them on to him.
I believe he is wanting a 30MM tube and a one pc mount but that's up in the air.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It's been a while since I've been in the market for a scope, but I can't possibly say enough good things about Vortex. I greatly prefer the 2 Vipers I bought on clearance for $250 over the $900 Sightron I have.

I've never needed their customer service, but I know that it's outstanding if you ever need it.

Recreational target shooting 400 yards and under doesn’t take much in the way of glass. Vortex is fine but I’d look at the strike eagle line in a 1-6 or 1-8. The Burris RT-6 would work too. Even the Bushnell AR optics line would work. At the end of the day it’s still a budget AR - agging in the 1’s is probably not in his future.

I wasn’t saying it wouldn’t shoot. I have a 308 version from them that I picked up for $600 and it does just fine. I was just saying at 400 and under with an AR, the glass isn’t going to be the limiting factor. He’d probably be better off with something around $400 and buying a decent drop in trigger with the savings.

If he's willing to go to a 34mm tube I'd look at the Bushnell Elite Line DMR II scope with the G3 reticule. Midway is selling them for $744.97 iirc.A lot of scope for the money especially at that price. I also like the ADM scope mount of if he wants to save some money the Burris PERR scope mount.

The Vortex Viper PST Gen 2 1-6x is excellent, all except for the weight. But Boris the Blade says "heavy is good", so YMMV.
Really like that it has crosshairs with a simple illuminated dot and not some goofy circle/horseshoe/tacticool bs
