Phoenix,
Im a decent welder, started years ago with oxy acty, then stick, and own a few tigs, so now gonna give tig a try.

i don't weld heavy steel, probably nothing larger than 1/2'', so unit should be portable so i can move it around, throw it in a truck ect

whose got what, and only those that have experience, not interested in heresay, just the facts please.
thanks

My friend has an inverter Miller Tig. I've used it a few times. Nice that's is so small, yet powerful enough for a hobbyist. I forget exactly which model, but it was smaller than a carry on suit case.

FWIW, most of my TIG welding is/was done with a Syncrowave DX250 at work.

As a general rule it takes 1 amp per 1/1000 of an inch to TIG weld. So in order to weld 1/2 inch you will need to makes several passes unless you get a big machine.
If you can weld with oxy/acetylene then TIG welding should be easy to catch onto.
What is nice about a good TIG is that you can change out the torch head with an electrode stinger and stick weld if you don't want to make as many passes.
I do all my heavy welding with a Lincoln arc welder. I have a smaller Miller wire feed that I use the most for smaller projects.
My brother is a welder by trade and his TIG is a Miller Maxstar. I have used it quite a bit.

I have a couple migs, small guy you can move around via suitcase style, do most of my hobby stuff with, and also have a big miller, about the size of truck toolbox, for the big heavy shiat, so the tig is mostly for small stuff, saying i'd do 1/2 would be a stretch, but one never knows what you will need till you need it
thanks

I have and use a Miller Dynasty at wok and home. I am a Miller fan boy so......

If you dont need anything too crazy I would look into a Miller Econotig.
