Protection from rust?

Hey all,

I am going to be storing some of my weapons in a cold environment during the winter but humid summer.

They will be inside, in a safe, so I am talking about the outside environment.

I am trying to take precautions so none of them rust but just looking for feedback/advice/guidance/suggestions?

First thing I thought of were getting some of those silicone covered gun socks, anyone have experience with those?

Also read an article about the vacuum sealing bags?

I do have a bunch of the reusable silica packs that I will be using as well, but I like redundancies.

Get a few bags/boxes of desiccant and put them in the safe. Recharge them periodically and lube the firearms up well.

That should do it.

Or, if you can bring 120VAC cord into the safe, get a golden rod for the safe.

good recommendation above, if in a humid eviro. i have a cooler on my house, and well its on now, as we don't usually turn ac on till june or so. and my collection sets out in the ''toy room'' on racks and inside safes, some of the more pricey i keep in the grey silicon wraps, but the others, get a wipe down with protective juice once a year, (my dusting of them, hanging on racks they seem to collect it, well why wouldn't they will alittle lubricant on them). have to say i've not had a gun rust at all using cooler.

Keep them out of vacuum seal bags as you might trap moisture inside.

Inside the safe I use large desiccant bags (dried in an oven every few months) and I use Sheath to wipe down metal parts about 2x a year. A dehumidifier would be a good addition for humid environs.

For longer term storage ... in the past I have put on a coating of grease like RIG then wrapped snug with saran wrap - sort of like a poor-mans cosmoline (this all takes time to remove). For barrels I have soaked twisted brown paper in oil and threaded it thru barrels.

How do I re dry them out in the oven?

Like on a cookie sheet at 325 degrees?

Might do what I did go to my local Harley Davidson store when they get their new bikes and they have these big bags about 12” x 4” in diameter and they are packed in with the Harleys to keep the moisture away from the bike store in shipment I have two or three of those in the bottom of my safe have used it for years so far so good

Surplus rifles stored for half a century or more are covered in some type of oil.

There are a few sources online for VCI bags and I might have even seen them on Amazon. Not very expensive and I have a couple on the way for special guns that dont get out as often

Anyone ever had a problem with ammo rusting? Just opened a case of Wolf 7.62 x 39 that I’ve had a couple years and some of the boxes have rusted ammo.

is it corrosive ammo, some of the inport stuff kinda promotes ugliness, whether corrosion or rust.

and will add, lived here most of me life and only rust issue i have ever had was a gun caught in rain, and have lived with evap coolers most of the time, for a fewmonths, when a kid, winchesters and pistolas, were lavished with ample oils when out riding the range and being strange

prevention or a tad of it goes a long way

I also recommend Eezox. I apply it, let it sit overnight then wipe off the excess, and do it for three nights. Never a problem, even with my daughters' guns in humid Minnesota. It does not gum up the metal, and lubes don't bother it.
