Planning on going up near Payson next week and was wondering if there are any places to shoot you would recommend. I'm guessing there might be fire restrictions too.

Any suggestions?

All State and Tonto National Forest Lands around Payson are completely closed to shooting and much of it to any recreation. Only option is the shooting range outside of town if that is open.

I have a place up around Payson, but it’s nothing special.

You can shoot from 5 yards to 1000. There are steel plates at 1000. It does take a 4x4 to get there. I think I’ve seen other people there, maybe 5 times in the 20 years I’ve been going to this spot.

I have a home in Payson and would like to know where to go to just plink a bit. Test a new gun
Any suggestions would be helpful. I know this is an old post but just thought I would ask

If you take the road that goes to the shooting range, there is a fork to the right, that leads to an old quarry. I haven’t been there in years, so I don’t know what condition it is in.

Jim Jones range is nice, for only $50/year to be a member. It’s only open to the public on Saturday. The other days, you hardly see many, if any people there.

Last time I was down that road the gate was locked going to that quarry.. If you go down Doll Baby Rd past the golf course and the sewer plant you will find some safe places to shoot also

Another option would be to continue south, past the entrance to Jim Jones. That road comes out by Gisela. There are several spots along that road, also.

Yeah, there are spots out by doll baby, also.

Have you gone through the gate past doll baby and then cross the East verde and take the road north? It comes out by crackerjack mine. Or, go south from the same area and come out in Rye? Both are cool drives.

What kind of vehicle do you drive?

Yes, both roads are a very cool drive with nice scenery. The road to Rye was a really nice drive before the fire but is still pretty now. I have taken that road a few times when the highway is shut down for an accident to not have to wait in line. It is a lengthy drive but at least you don't have to sit and wait
