Yes PayPal bad, PayPal enemy.... got it.

Selling some silver and buyer wants to pay with, yes you guessed it, PayPal. Is there someway this can be a scam? I feel the buyer is good to go, but concerned the money could be withdrawn from my account under some paypal rule or something after the transaction is completed. Does paypal report these transactions to the IRS? Heck I’m not even sure how to move the “money” from paypal to hard currency, lol.

Being a dinosaur is sad. Though I was high tech when I got one of those counterfeit bill markers!

PayPal has two payment options. 1. Pay as a gift 2. Pay for services/items.

Option 2 deducts a 3% (iirc) fee from the money you received. Option 1 does not.

Iirc option 1 is gives you the full amount and does not cover the buyer under PayPal dispute process for refunds. Basically buyer sends money at their own risk.

Option 2 gives the buyer some option s on disputing payment or items received with the possibility of getting their money back if dispute is approved. Not exactly sure how that affects the seller side. I'm guessing they could ban your account.

To get your money (cash) you have to link a bank account to your PayPal or they can send a check (for a fee) IIRC. Tou then transfer the paypal balance to your bank account. Usually takes 3-4 days.

Do you know the buyer? Are you sending the items with tracking info?

If you must use paypal I would have them send payment as a "gift". Or have the seller cover any fees so you net your sale amount.

The other options are Zelle. This is a person to person payment that most banks offer.

Thanks.
Doing it F-T-F so cash, IMO, seems simpler and cleaner. Never thought about Zelle. Use that to fund my daughter, lol.

When doing FTF, I've accepted Paypal Friends and Family (option 1 mentioned above). It works just fine for that and I've never had a problem. They have no buyer protection, so they can't suck the money back out of your account.

I've used Zelle too for FTF transactions. While Zelle is near-instant for smaller transfers and for transfers with people you regularly deal with, there can occasionally be a delay.

Cant say what can and cant happen but I have been using paypal for YEARS and have never had an issue. A lot of people just want the ability to pay with a credit card and may not have or want to part with cash at any given moment and while I abhor debt .. some people are cool with a running credit card bill.

I usually just take the 3% hit when selling as the cost of doing business but have done "friends and family" on a few purchases that I have made.

I even have the little attachment to be able to swipe credit cards but most of my payments arent face to face.

If your really concerned .. go with option B and just eat the 3% or charge accordingly.

Use Venmo or Zelle and screw Paypal. Their dispute process takes so long your grandchildren will inherit your refund.

I put a very expensive ring on Ebay a few years ago and had a guy inquire about selling it and he would pay with Paypal if I would end the auction early. I did some research and found that some people were doing that same thing and then they were telling Paypal that it wasn't as described etc and actually getting the money removed from the person and refunded then it was a battle back and forth. It wasn't worth the risk to me so I have no personal experience as to how it would have turned out. Being that it was the only way he would pay and would not even do any other way of the transaction. I even offered to figure out a way of doing a face to face and he wanted no part of that either. Just be careful and cover your ass

I have used PayPal on Ebay for years and have never had a problem.
Now Ebay wants to drop PayPal and have you link your bank account up so they can deposit the money directly into your bank account.
They not only want your bank account information , they also now want your social security number.
I am guessing the next step is they will 1099 you for all the sales you make.

I can't claim credit for this. I check in on a blog called KNUCKLEDRAGGIN MY LIFE AWAY, which is a male chauvinist crude humor site, full of toxic masculinity and even thinly veiled racism. But I muddle through it for the gems it still produces.

Anyway, the author of the blog announced he was no longer accepting payments from PayPal and was closing out his account. I still have a PayPal account, but maybe use it once a year or so and have gotten away from it because of their anti-rights stances and policies. So I figured the blogger's reason was something similar, but when I read what he posted, I was shocked,...and that takes a lot to do to me these days.

Let me just post from his blog directly so you understand what's happening;.....

PLEASE READ THIS: I am no longer accepting Paypal

I am attempting to close my paypal account. I have cancelled all recurring payments from those that have set those up and removed the paypal button from my site.

Why, you ask? Check this out:

Last updated on November 3, 2022. 5. involve the sending, posting, or publication of any messages, content, or materials that, in PayPal’s sole discretion, (a) are harmful, obscene, harassing, or objectionable, (b) depict or appear to depict nudity, sexual or other intimate activities, (c) depict or promote illegal drug use, (d) depict or promote violence,  criminal activity, cruelty, or self-harm (e) depict, promote, or incite hatred or discrimination of protected groups or of individuals or groups based on protected characteristics (e.g. race, religion, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, etc.) (f) present a risk to user safety or wellbeing, (g) are fraudulent, promote misinformation, or are unlawful, (h) infringe the privacy, intellectual property rights, or other proprietary rights of any party, or (i) are otherwise unfit for publication.

That's right, Paypal is saying they can fine me $2500 PER INSTANCE for posting what they consider to be hate speech or misinformation on a platform they have nothing to do with.
Talk shit about the government? 2500 bucks.
Talk shit about tranny groomers? 2500 bucks.
Talk shit about LGBTWhatever? 2500 bucks.
Talk shit about gun grabbers? 2500 bucks.
Talk shit about Ukraine or whoever their pet is? 2500 bucks.
f*** that.

I have been on the phone off and on all morning trying to shut my account down completely with no success. A little while ago I got a message from them saying that my account must remain inactive for SIX MONTHS before they'll close it.

I've done what I could. I've cancelled all recurring payments, pulled all funds from my account, removed my linked bank, removed the paypal button from the sidebar of this blog, all that good shit.

Again, please do NOT send me anything through paypal.
Thank you and thanks to WiscoDave who sent me the information about the Terms and Agreements.

It's supposed to go into effect November 3, 2022. Paypal is now backpedaling, trying to play damage control.

Is there a good replacement? I sold more holsters out of state than in AZ. I need a way to accept credit card payments. No one in 2022 is going to send a check and wait for it to clear.

This might be a good option.

From another finance site.
PayPal Holdings said on Monday it will not fine users for misinformation and an earlier policy update that said customers could have to pay $2,500 in damages was sent in error -
