This walks you through the who, what, were of the entire incident. LOTS of cowards, both school personnel as well as cops.

The whole thing could have been avoided had the first "security monitor" (designated teachers) to see the shooter (who he recognized as the "crazy boy" former student carrying a large bag) taken appropriate action. Instead it seems everyone involved with security(?) just let it happen.

He was allowed to retire.

But now it came out that the retirement was probably allowed due to Peterson having helped cover up a sexual assault by the Sheriff's son.

Ah, I figured he would be hounded publicly so bad, that he'd have to leave the country wish his cushy pension, or do something unspeakable to himself.
As far as the cover up, sounds like one hand always washes the other
