DALLAS — Two historic military planes collided and crashed to the ground Saturday during an air show in Dallas, exploding into a ball of flames and sending plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky. It was unclear how many people were on board the aircraft or if anyone on the ground was hurt.

Leah Block, a spokesperson for Commemorative Air Force, which produced the Veterans Day weekend show and owned the crashed aircraft, told ABC News she believed there were five crew members on the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber and one aboard the P-63 Kingcobra fighter plane. The Houston-based aircraft were not giving rides to paying customers at the time, she said.

This is terrible.

My niece lives in Texas and sent me a video of the B-17 this morning as it flew over her house, asking me what kind of plane it was.

She sent the other video of the collision a little while after it happened.

With the way the fighter went into the bomber, it almost looked like a kamikaze attack. I can't imagine they'll ever be able to determine the why-how, but I hope they do. Tragic stuff, fo sho.

Another site, well respected and knowledgeable about flying these old warbirds posited that it could be the notoriously poor vision from the KingCobra's cockpit that caused the pilot to lose situational awareness. A shame, whatever the real cause was. Lots of time and heart and money from many people invested in both of them.
