Yeah... nice gun. Would I buy one? Probably not. Why? Because I'd rather buy 2-3-4-5 other guns instead of one gun.

"But I want a short stroke piston operated, duty grade, AR!!!"
Sure - buy a Sig 516 Patrol for $1500.00 It also has the adjustable gas block for suppressed / normal - but it also has a third "wide open" option that you can use to blow the gas system out if it's gotten carbon clogged or are otherwise having gassing related issues and just need it to cycle (they tell you that leaving it in that mode will damage the gun). My guess is that 99.99% of shooters will never see the difference between the Sig and the HK in terms of reliability or performance. Both guns are going to perform very well for purpose and be incredibly reliable

If you are a SpecOps guy - or big city SWAT - or fugitive taskforce officer - or US Marshall - or someone else who runs a gun for a living and is very likely to be in a gunfight - and you are going to train thousands of rounds per month - then spending the extra $2500 for the extra features (the ambi stuff is certainly nice) - might be worth the extra coin. If you aren't one of these people - then you are buying this because you like expensive toys. Buying expensive toys is fine - do what you want - but be real about the fact that this is really what is happening.

For me - I'd rather buy 2 - 3 other guns with accessories and / or a bunch of ammo.

My 2 cents...

When HK first came out with their version of a piston-driven AR prior to 2010, it actually was very much better designed and executed than almost all the others out there. So back THEN, it might have made sense to spend the extra coin. But in the 15 or so years since then, everybody else has been learning from HK (and others), and various small details and improvements have been adopted by many of the models available from their competitors.

Back then, I truly was all hot and bothered to get my hands on an HK416 upper for myself,...if I could have afforded it,...and found one. (I did find some HK416 mags, though, and they have been great.) But having built many piston ARs from different kits and parts sources, I've now seen how there isn't really that much difference anymore. The SIG rifles are just as well engineered and fabricated now from what I can tell. I still think $2500 for a SIG is too much, but I'd more readily spend that amount than $4000 for an HK.

Seeing them at $1500 - $1700 these days... (https://www.omahaoutdoors.com/sig-sauer-516/ assuming that they are available behind the link)... Just over $1000 used on GunBroker...

I bought mine a few years ago - and it's been a great gun...

Any chance that you've used the Superlative Arms piston kit? Thoughts?
