As I was reading a past issue of FlyPast! Magazine, there was an article on the movie "Devotion."

I have had a copy since it came out, and hadn't made the time to watch it. After reading the article I finally sat down and pushed play.

It is well worth a watch. Rarely does Hollywood stick to the true story - but in this one they got it 98% correct. The biggest inconsistency is they overplayed the friendship between Hudner and Jesse Brown's wife. They actually never met till after his death.

It isn't super common we get a movie on the Korean war, so that just adds to this being a good movie. Many of the flight scenes were made using actual aircraft (4 Corsairs, 2 Bearcats, a Skyraider, and a Mig 15.) The rescue chopper is the last to exist in flying shape. The scene when they are flying low over the water on a mission is epic, and not CGI.

After being somewhat disappointed with "Maverick" (expectedly) this one check all the boxes.

I saw it in the theater a few months ago and agree it is good. But I had no idea until the end of the movie that it was a true story. I went in just thinking it was some typical Hollywood racial justice effort concealed with a made up war movie. The surprise reveal at the end that it was real was very pleasing.

Not only is it a true story - they actually for the most part got it all right. Even the chance meeting with Liz Taylor was true. In researching how true the events were the only things that they missed were the aforementioned friendship with Brown's wife and Hudner didn't shoot down a Mig (although a Corsair did shoot down a Mig, it was Jesse Folmar.) They got all the important stuff correct, which is rare.

I think the amount of fictional "racial justice effort" hollywood likes do really hurt this movie's success as many people probably didn't realize it was a true story and wrote it off, which is a real shame.

The coverage of the movie in Magazines like FlyPast! and Aeroplane (great magazines for aviation enthusiasts) really add to the movie - as they go into detail about the history and actual aircraft used.
