There is a steep learning curve to arming drones, and there will be casualties in the process.

So today will be published in military history textbooks as one of the most pivotal moments of evolution of drone warfare as well as the Russia/Ukraine war itself.

In case you haven't yet heard, earlier today Ukraine destroyed a third of Russia's strategic long-range nuclear-capable bomber fleet. Over 40 aircraft. It was a coordinated attack all across the country deep inside Russia, at 4 different strategic bases, all hit simultaneously. Easily over 5 billion dollars worth of replacement cost. Some estimate up to 7 billion.

And it was pulled off with the small short-range inexpensive drones we have all been seeing on the footage from the war.

In an operation supposedly suggested by and initiated by Zelensky himself 18 months ago, Russian-speaking native operatives covertly smuggled the drone components into Russia (or acquired them there - details are a little uncertain) and assembled the drones behind enemy lines while posing as locals. The drones were secreted away in the tops of wooden sheds on flatbed trucks, as well as cargo trailers of other trucks. The trucks parked within range of the air bases and the operatives evacuated a small distance away to then quietly and hidden out of the way pilot them to their targets. The false roofs of the sheds and trailers were retracted by remote control and the drones took flight.

The White House was given advanced notice (1 minute? 5 minutes?) before the operation.

This helps Ukraine, of course, but seems also calculated to be a gift to the U.S. as well, by degrading Russian nuclear delivery capacity, specifically in the aftermath of the data dump exposure of Russia's nuclear weapon facilities by Der Spiegel 2 weeks ago. (If you haven't heard about THAT, look it up. It makes the Snowden leak look like a kindergarten prank.) But of course, while it is a gift for the Pentagon,...it is also a nightmare to make U.S. base commanders sit bolt upright in bed screaming in a cold sweat. Something exactly like this could also easily be inflicted upon us here and abroad, approximating a modern day Pearl Harbor.

In fact, the Russian propaganda machine immediately dubbed today's attack on the strategic bomber fleet a Russian Pearl Harbor. This is a misnomer, of course, as the Japan attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack without a declaration of war. The result of the strike was that the US entered WWII. The Russia-Ukraine war started by Putin is in its 4th year, and the strategic bombers destroyed today have been bombing Ukrainian cities for three years. Better to call it a Tsushima - for the Battle of Tsushima of May 27, 1904, when two Russian fleets were destroyed and the Russia-Japan came closer to the end.

Here is a picture of one of the wooden sheds with it's false roof in a rented warehouse before departing for today' mission.

And here's some video of the attacks. There is an awful lot of it available on the net if you want to go find it. Probably will be all over the news as well.
