From what I read, the requirement for DOT approved tires is a Federal regulation. I have found nothing in the Arizona statutes relating to that. Does the rule apply only to Interstate highways? The top speed of my UTV is 30 mph. To get to forest roads I have to use a state highway which usually has very little traffic. The front tires are getting worn and I don't want to spend big bucks to replace them with tires rated for 70 mph if it isn't necessary. I haven't seen the local law enforcement give anyone any hassle, but...

I have been stopped by Pima County Sheriffs , Game Wardens and Forest rangers and all they have been worried about is whether I have been drinking and if my vehicle is licensed and insured.
They have never even given my tires a glance.

The thing about road tires on an ATV is that they need more air pressure and it can make the ride rougher.
Pavement does wear out off road tires pretty quick if you drive on it a lot.
And Yes , road tires are expensive.

Not sure in AZ but likely the same, any municipality can issue an equipment citation is your equipment, in their opinion is not roadworthy. The only way out of the citation is to prove them wrong or replace the equipment and hope the judge dismisses because of your replacement, which is usually the case.

Problem is your tires are not DOT rated, so that's out, you would have a buy a set of tires and bring the receipt to court to get out of the ticket.
