The 5th gen 4Runner has been in production since 2009 and now we have a new look at the 6th gen 2025 4Runner.

Time will tell if these will be as popular. But, it took Toyota over a decade to include creature comforts that have been in Fords and Chevys since the mid-2000s. Vented seats, backup sensors, the list goes on.

The old saying is that "Toyota is reliable, that is why they don't have the bells and whistles". I think this saying is looking more like "Toyota is greedy, they want to charge more for this crap and just used "reliability" as an excuse for not providing helpful features in earlier models".

I wish it didn't look so much like the Tacoma front end (which does look awesome) but the backend will take some time to get used to.

After looking over the pics/vids/specs on the new 4Runner I'm really glad I sprung for a new 5th gen 4Runner a few years ago. My 2021 TRD offroad, while its all ancient tech, will serve me just fine for
a long, long time.

I used a different equation. Since Toyota won't Import the Land Cruiser/Prado, I side with the Lexus GX470 or 460. Built up a bit, It surpasses the stock Land Cruiser, and has V8 towing capacity.

Oh yeah, it also has 3 row seating, multi-zone A/C, vented seats, under vehicle "courtesy lights" that with a switch added become "rock lights", 4X4 terrain control of Xfer case and wheels, the equivalent of a low-speed cruise control for offroad, and KDSS to automatically disconnect/connect front and rear sway bars, KDSS can only be added as a special feature to the 4 runner TRD offroad, not the lower trim or higher trim TRD Pro.

Then after firmly making my decision and starting on that journey, I met a guy with a Lexus 2021 LX550. All the features of the GX460, in addition vehicle height that still works after he added a 3" lift kit. The vehicle can be lowered to low-rider class height for entry and exit then adjusted back up to factory +3" or anyplace in between, for low parking structures. All at the push of a button.

My key experience and consideration was windshield time. My Bronco, jeep, 4x4 Chevy and 4x4 Ford, all had over 95% blacktop/dirt time and maximum 5% real 4x4. All were well optioned. I like comfort.

The 5th gen is GOAT for sure! Plus you have the TRD Offroad edition which is also tops!

I guess I wouldn't say ancient tech, because it's been proven over the last 40 years of use in an offroad capacity.

Just pretty ancient by auto industry standards. And it is the reliability that makes me want to stay with the current Gen.

For example, I also have an old 2nd Gen 2005 Tacoma with the same basic engine (the 1GR-FE V6 engine) and the 5 speed automatic transmission as the 4Runner. The 5th Gen 4Runner engine is only different with its dual VVT-i valve timing for more power. So that Tacoma is a vehicle almost 20 years old which is pretty amazing.

Second gen taco!! I love it.

Did you get the 4x4 or 2wd?

How many miles on yours so far?

I've got a 2nd Gen Taco (4x4, double cab, short bed, TRD) that I bought new in July 2005, and it currently sports about 172k.

Before that, I had my dad's 1992 4Runner SR5. If that engine hadn't been such a POS, I'd have driven that until the wheels fell off. But that V6, while having a great low end, was a dog trying to speed up even to get on the freeway, had shit mileage. When my dad died (1997), it had about 98k on it, and the engine already needed to be rebuilt.

According to the local Toyota service manager (a friend of my dad's), pop was going to trade it in on something new because of the motor issues. He never did that, but the service manager rebuilt the engine at no cost to me. When I finally traded it in for the Tacoma, it only had 196k on the odometer but, that engine was done.

I really love my Tacoma, but would have been happy if the 4Runner had "lived".

Yeah that gen2 4Runner w the 3.slow was a real turd. They lost compression in the 5th or 6th cylinder. I wanted one but that motor was the reason I couldn’t do it.

Glad to hear the 4.0 Tacoma is doing well!

That 4Runner with my current motor would have been great.

I am happy with my Tacoma for a number of reasons, but that 4Runner would go anywhere. Just not fast or efficiently. LOL

My Tacoma is a TRD Sport PreRunner so its a 2wd and it has about 116K on it now. I got it when I retired here in Arizona and figured I won't need to own two 4wds. I had an FJ Cruiser before my current 4Runner and a series of older 4Runners before that. So a PreRunner seems to works out well for what I use it for. Mostly for shooting/exploring in the desert and for hauling duties.

116k on an 05……it’s still new!

I only want Toyota & Honda in my driveway….or a GT40 😎

How did you like that FJ? I was looking at getting a used one back in 2015 but the visibility out of the one I drove was why I initially said no. Too many blind spots and I was worried about not seeing a miata next to me at a light.

I was considering on FJ for my place here, then I found out the roof rack would not clear my garage door. A really tall truck, imagine with a lift.

That is a problem for sure! They have a tall stance even stock, so I can imagine with a lift that won't be feasible.
