22-250 rifles

So I inherited a couple of 22-250 rifles. Besides just ripping off rounds, what are they good for other than gopher hunting?

Leaving very little ballistic evidence to piece together when using varmint super lightweight HP 'grenade' projectiles.

Depends on what twist they have. If traditional 1:12 twist it will be regulated mostly to varmint/predator usage with bullets in the 40-55gr range being ideal. If 1:9 it can bridge into a nice medium game range.

You would still want to limit the quarry to speed goats and deer up to whitetail sized. and make sure to load it with a suitable bullet. some of the 55-64gr bonded bullets come to mind (ie. fed fusion, tbbc, nosler bonded, tsx) even read that the old winchester 64gr power point is a decent load for small deer out to 300-400 yds with proper shot placement.

I have a 1:9 myself but only a 22" barrel. wish it was a 26.....but then again it may get chopped to a 16-18" and threaded for my suppressor and be a good first deer rifle for my kids. My oldest is old enough next season Woot!!

Back in the 80's I had an older model of a Remington 700 BDL Heavy Barrel Varminter the would consistently shoot 0.5 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards. Killed many a Ground Hog with it back on the east coast coast. Never should have sold it. :.(

I have a Savage FV 26" 12 twist (or is it 14?) left over from those days... I've been thinking of either selling it off or installing the 260 rem barrel I have for it... now I might reconsider and see what suitable projectiles I have laying around..

I ground squirrel hunted with a guy years ago who had a Remington 700BDL Varmint special in .22-250. He was a handloader and consistently shot 3/8" 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

I had my best groups with 60 grain Hornady spire point promos using IMR 4895. Used it for the entire 50 years I owned the 700 BDL Varmint Special.

IMHO it's a fantastic coyote control round. With a 1-8/1-9 twist barrel it makes a fun longer range (informal) target rifle.
