Took this off my Facebook feed. Harvested earlier this month near Ash Fork. This is an old cat, and was suspected of being responsible for many missing domestic animals.

Sooooo,...when out hiking,...do you feel your sidearm is up to the task?

I'd be less concerned about what caliber I was packing, versus whether or not I could actually hit a charging mountain lion...let alone actually present a firearm in time. They tend to not to be a stationary target.

This age old argument (wild animal vs handgun) reminds of when Joe Biden said that police should just aim for the leg of a suspect...as if any police officer has both the time and skill to make that shot during the split seconds it takes to make the decision to fire.

44 mag or 9mm, neither have the power to stop a 150-200lb mountain lion dead in it's tracks in a full speed charge.

How did you track/kill that one? Nice hunting, btw.

It must still be super stealthy at it's size. Clearly is well fed.

There’s one not much smaller than that that has her hunting grounds around here.
I’ve seen her at least four times, and since the fire out by the National Guard range she’s moved her territory closer to town.
She’s been around here for at least 8 years that I know of, and that’s getting up there for one of them.

People love that their homes are so close to the desert, all while forgetting the desert is so close to their homes.

And really, for their size they are not that difficult to bring down with most commonly carried center fire pistol or rifle rounds.
Problem is they are stalkers, by the time you know they’re there, you may not have any time to react.

And the beast weighed in at 209
pounds.

Personally, I carry a Glock 29 in the outback. With Grizzly 200gr wrngc. More interested in good penetration on a thick bear.

My neighbor years ago was a lion tracker on retainer with several NA tribes; Navajo, Ute, etc. Each time he headed out he'd likely have a close encounter with big cats (had come upon as many as 3 at once). For personal protection he carried s .22 mag revolver. Told me cats died with incredible ease.

Wow that is awesome! That is the biggest mountain lion I have seen. If you do not mind me asking, how did you get it? Did you use dogs to track or call it in?

I have them out my way. I saw a female with 2 kittens once, just a mile from home. I had one run across the road about a 1/2 mile away. They sure keep the deer population in check.
