DO YOU KNOW YOUR FIRST AID

#1

Post by knockonit »

Well i a was reading some rags, and came across a few nightmare stories of attempts at first aid by very good intended folks, who in reality did not have the skils to address issues at hand.

So my question is, how much do you know about first aid, basic, trauma, gun shot wound, breathing skils.

just curious, I tend to gravitate towards those that know things i don't know, or have a skill set in, not always, but try to.

any great local classes to take to learn how, to, not to ect.

I would highly recommend taking at a minimum a Stop the Bleed class. Great free class that covers the use of a tourniquet and wound packing and possibly chest seals depending on the instructor. Another great class is through Independence Training called the IFAK. Glen is a great instructor and teaches off of the TCCC concept of MARCH. With an IFAK on you all the tools you need to save a life are right at your fingertips.

Being a Paramedic and a USCCA Instructor/Training Counselor I have found that teaching their course Emergency First Aid Fundamentals provides a good balance of life saving trauma techniques and recognizing other life threatening emergencies such as a medical condition (heart attack, stroke, diabetic emergency) for the lay person.

And of course CPR is always good. Remember push hard and fast on the chest and keep the beat to the song Staying Alive!

Hope this helps a little bit.

I'd be interested in attending a class or two as well. Wilderness first aid, first responder to a vehicle accident, etc....something along those lines. I just wanna know how to keep a person alive long enough for someone that knows WTF they're doing shows up.

I carry a fairly extensive FAK in the bike/truck/home, but only have extremely basic knowledge on how to use it. Myself and a large group of friends came upon a vehicle accident just as it happened a year or so ago. My FAK came in handy, but I didn't. Luckily, we had a (retired) Corpsman with us.

Glad I was in a profession where we had to have a CPR and First Aid refresher every year for 36yrs. I believe I’ve retained a lot of it?

Unless the red cross class is taught by an EMT/Paramedic/ER RN or flight nurse then stay clear of them. They literally have people who have no experience, no patient contact and no reality in teaching their classes. They follow a book and videos. Stay clear.

Can say the same for most other courses.

Next class is in Wilhoit (kirkland) at their fire station from 1pm until 3pm this Sunday (tomorrow). Nice little drive up the mountain, do a two hour class then be home in time for dinner.

I once saw a firearms trainer who went to a medical vendor's booth, bought a tourniquet and received a short course on how to use it, then went back to his own booth and offered a course on how to use a tourniquet.

myself and another took the ''stop the bleed' class at john c, quite informative, enjoyed the little over two hours, enticed me to inquire more into other areas to be prepared, at my age, what else do i have to do. other than shoot, shoot, and well shoot.
