I can see how I totally worded this post wrong.......
"how many bullets do you need" is what I hear from people in disgust, who think two spare mags is like going off to war, and it's totally unjustified if you're not a cop. Yet the news story presented is a clear cut example of what can happen anytime, anywhere....and that you never know what you'll need.
But I've heard rj's statement more than once, that what you have at the bedside, or on you, is what you use to fight to get to where you have what you need to take care of business.

This: “what you have at the bedside, or on you, is what you use to fight to get to where you have what you need to take care of business.”
Usually G19 and a spare mag

I dont know the home owner and certainly dont want to be disparaging of him but when 5 armed guys show up its usually because they have some intel that they expect a good pay day. Say .. drug money or drugs.

Having said that .. just before I escaped Laveen before its downfall I had several groups of teens show up at my door looking for "Leroy" No s*** that is who they asked for. The house on the cul-de-sac just before my cul-de-sac was in the exact location as mine and I suspected they were up to no good and all one had to do to make a mistake and land up at my door was travel one extra block by mistake. From the main drag they were identical. If someone were going to rob them it would be easy enough for them to show up at my place as had the prospective purchasers.

So how much is enough in that case. As much as you can have. I don't keep a 30 rd mag but I can do a NY reload since I keep several loaded guns throughout the house. Ya just never know where you are going to be when someone kicks the door. Combined I have about 50 rds and can bring some 12 gauge to bear.

If I take a shower .. a gun is on the sink.

How many do I need?

I carry with one in the chamber and a topped off mag. Typically carry a spare mag (...most of the time)

25 rounds.

Hope I NEVER have occasion to find out if this is enough, but I generally feel adequately equipped.

...to get to a rifle ;)

just wondering how many have actually played out a home invasion, and have a plan for action in the casa.

lol, i did this a few times with the youngest daughter, and the big boss. , simple plan, dogs, me, them.
key words for access and recognition, before action plan and after action plan.

and the devil help them if they get past the dogs, what i miss they will surely handle easily, the killing corridor is quite small, so #4 buck will handle it all, and of course they both have side arms.

it is good to have a plan, whilst plans don't always work, its a begining, and the end, well, it will find itself, always does

good shooting

Me and the ol lady have a plan set up for anything that may happen if bump goes in the night and have played it out.

I have a lock on our bedroom door. I live in a tin can and there isnt a whole lot of space for people to get lost. Its a simple plan and maybe not very heroic but .. I have insurance and should get some money back for anything taken .. I worry first and foremost about my wife. I have kind of grown attached to her after 20 years.

My simple plan .. stay cloistered behind the bed as cover with an 870 pointed at the door. Part of my going to bed routine is to bring in my phone and my living room gun. Anything outside the bedroom I can replace. Its just stuff. You crack the door to the bedroom ... and there will be a world of hurt.

Stuff can be replaced.

There are a few handguns and other nasties in there. Dont want to test it .. dont come in the bedroom.

A home invasion while we are home .. I will admit .. I will have to wing it.

My plan is very similar to Alex’s - except I have to corral a ten year old in the mix...

Not a day goes by that I don’t regret buying a stucco home.

Depends, just a go out will be 8-9 rounds, church carry a extra mag. Offroading matters where. Slim chance of illegal traffic just 30 rounds hand gun, high chance of illegal traffic area 30 rounds for pistol & around 80 for the AR. My ride along will carry the same.

For me it's all about where I am going to be. Each situation is going to present different potential circumstances that might present. No one can plan for all occurrences, just prioritize the top few that realistically may occur. As said by others home has and should have a practiced plan. All external has a basic defence and withdrawal plan. If SHTF and WROL then that changes things greatly!
