Re-visiting previously read threads

I noticed on another website I regularly visit when I return to a previously read thread it takes me in the thread where I left off and starts out with the "new" replies. This site doesn't seem to do that. Sometimes I can't remember(CRS Can't remember sh**) where I left off in a thread especially if it's several pages and have to hunt for the new replies.

Am I doing something wrong or is that the norm? Do I have to subscribe to the thread or something?
