I was just in my message box and looked at the SENT box. I had over 12 pages of messages sitting in there from 4 years ago until today. I deleted 11 pages that were just taking up space. Just trying to clean up some stuff.

PM's stay in the "Outbox" until the recipient reads them.
PM's in your "Sent" or even "Inbox" don't really move the needle much with regard to saving space on the server/DB. The vast majority of disk usage is made up of uploaded media (pics, videos, etc)... not linked media, but those actually uploaded to the site.
That said, people are limited to a certain amount of PM's, so you should manage that appropriately like you suggested.
