Re: 308 battle rifle.
A FAL is a lot better battle rifle. It has been one of the top choices (that & the G3) for a half century by those that need the firepower over that of a 'poodle shooter'.
Maybe not a better target rifle past 400m in the basic form, but it can be tuned to enhance performance without resorting to expensive gunsmithing and reliability reducing mods.
The FAL is a lot easier to maintain, select options for (less $), and is a lot less ammo-sensitive.
Get one if you want something you can bet your life on.

Re: 308 battle rifle.
I just looked there, not a single listing for the FAL.
Apex, Sarco, Numrich, Gunthings, Ernst Armory for better luck.
And DSA for new production.

Being a old man, I do like the M14. It was very easy to maintain and it work every time. And yes, I bet my life on it for a year. I now have M1A match that I got in 1974 and it still holds MOA even out at 600 yards. The first one is the one is like I had in Nam.
This is my NM M1A.

Funny how it usually follows age brackets.
Us (over 60) like those from back then.
The youngsters like those AR's.
Whatever flips yer bippy!

M1A if I had to choose, LR308 AR-10 if you want 308 on a budget though.

Re: 308 battle rifle.
Not in my case.
I cut my teeth on the M1 Garand and lusted after an M14 clone since I was 18. Back in 1987 when I shot my first LEG match to qualify for my $187 surplus M1, I was teamed up with a couple of old duffers in their 60s who loaned me a match grade Springfield M1A to complete the course. I was convinced it was what I MUST have. While I was never able to afford a true National Match model, I have owned a few M14 type rifles over the years.
Then I acquired a surplus Canadian C1 (FAL) and fell in love with that system. Owned a para model too.
All the while I was also playing around with AR rifles and have built well over 40 in my time. I knew the AR10 platform had even better potential than either, but the proper new production examples like Knight's or LWRC or POF were even more expensive than the FALs or M14s. The competing dimensions and tolerances between the manufacturers of the newer reborn AR10 styles also made it complicated to simply set about making your own AR10 precision rifle. Heck, there were even 2 entire different and incompatible receiver styles. But now, finally, there is a settling out of these competing standards in the AR10 world and order is establishing. And it is now more affordable to build a match grade tack-driver on the AR10 technology than the M14 or FAL. And you can do it at home, by yourself,...just like assembling an AR15, with many of the same tools. The mags are now cheaper as well. The recoil impulse is lighter. The optional accessories available are greater.
It is simply superior.
